Why only 8 busses

Sometimes I wish I had at least 12. I almost never have static mixes (at least the volume of the elements change throughout the mix). I use a desk without automation, so I use busses like crazy. The biggest use for me is to send, for example, the rhythm guitar part (main part, doubled part, extra st...

I'm in the middle of recording a project where a nylong strung guitar is the instrumental foundation. The style is lighter indi-pop, which may differ from what you are doing, but the following is guaranteed to give you what you want: Take an hour or two before you start tracking for real, throw up w...

Hey Oceanic, I've had one for years, starting with a 16 channel one, then bit-and-pieced together a 32 channel one. Just used it today. I think you have a bunch of board for the cash you likely spent on it. If you got the most common channels with shelving eq, don't let that get you down. While you ...

If you can make a cable, you can make those super easily. To make a insert to direct out cable: 1. Strip an extra long piece of the "hot" wire and solder it to both the hot and cold solder points on the insert side of the cable. 2. Solder both the ground and the "cold" wires to the ground solder poi...

Re: Tracking vs Mixing

It seems like I've done more tracking than mixing in the past. This is mostly because I've done much more 2-3 mic hi-fi stuff than multi-track stuff. With the 2-3 mic stuff, what you get is what you get and then it is off to mastering. I have also tracked a few multi-track things without mixing them...

Re: Woman rockers.

Women who play music just do it for me. Women rockers especially. Joan Jett live in 1983, 30 feet from the stage is my favorite rock memory. Oh what an impressionable young lad I was. If rock and roll is about sex, why is it that much more than 1/2 the rockers are guys. The gender ratio is roughly h...

Re: Live to multitrack studio recording?

Actually, bleed is not that bad of an idea. I don't worry too much about it (worry in the sense of "Oh crap, bleed exists"). Phase problems are the biggest problems you will run into (the 3:1 distance rule isn't a magic bullet, but do keep it in mind), and you won't be able to do anything radical to...

Re: good cheap new kick drum mic under $100.

Uh... regarding what I posted before about not connecting the shield to the ground on the XLR connector: I googled around and found enough modifications that do connect the shield to the ground as well as the cold connection, and none saying you shouldn't, to make me doubt my advice. I wish I could ...

Re: good cheap new kick drum mic under $100.

The SM57 and the AKG D112 work well enough and are under $100 (used for the D112), but IMO the best cheap kick mic is a cheap PZM, especially the old Radio Shack ones (NOT the new ones they have in the stores). There are usually a couple a' three on ebay. A PZM in a kick is the most idiot proof set-...

Re: What is the story on Nagra tape recorders?

I love my Nagra. I hate my Nagra. Not the thing if you want tape flavor, and they are quirky as hell, but DAMN they are so well made. Beautiful too. Besides, you can do all major repair work underwater with a butter knife. Some are mono (the 4.2 series and I think the 3.something are too), so look o...

Re: Names NOT to Use for Your STUDIO

One in town is called Hear2Hear . I dare anyone to name a lamer one. I really have no idea how someone could say, "Yea, Hear to Hear. No wait, Hear 2 Hear. That's it!" I always supposed someone lost a bet and had to name it that. Funny thing though; it is one of the biggest (if not the biggest in te...

Re: mother lode of open reel decks!

Holy Crap! I have a friend who used one of those (I can't remember which, but there are at least 4 in the pictures) as a pair of preamps. It was colored to be sure, but it had a beautiful tone; describing it is the only time I would say "warm tube sound" with a straight face. There is no other way o...

(and don't get me started on the lyrics - "the other one's barely bleeding"? The other what? The other heart? There are two hearts in this song? You mean like a Klingon? What the heck's going on?!) Do you mean the line, "Now the old boy may be barely breathing?" Chris Garges Charlotte, NC Although ...

Re: Tues, Jan 18th @ Rathskeller in Chapel Hill @ 7pm - NC M

OK, it looks like a few people are going to be there. My next question is how are we going to know (for those of us who cannot put faces to any of these handles) who to look for. I don't imagine the Rat-killer is going to be more or less empty at 7 p.m..
