Re: sonic maximizers
Maxi's compress, eq, add reverb, etc. to a mix. They aren't inherently bad (like communism and Bill Clinton); they are cheaply made and/or programmed and provide a one-size fits all for your mix. If your stuff isn't going to mastering, go ahead and try one. If you will be going to mastering, don't b...

Re: RNC power supply polarity
I once plugged the wrong polarity adapter into one of my RNCs. It broke. But they offered to fix it for free, which I never took them up on.

Re: mixing tips...
Can't argue with Vomit. Most of these suggestions are compromising. Anytime you have to use boxes, eq, and so on to correct the playing of an instrument, you are compromising your mix...unless you get really creative and make some crazy sound that doesn't sound atypical of a kit.

Re: mixing tips...
You could try putting an expander on the room tracks, and side chain close mics to trigger the expander. Or you could roll off a lot of high end. Or you could use a medium attack and long release on a compressor so the transients still get through but cymbals are turned down. Or you could ride fader...

Re: Tape Bias Voodoo
The KeFauver book (I think it's reviewed in new TapeOp) is a good resource for learning about alignment. The book contains handy diagrams for bias adjustments and shows how a signal is affected by them. I know nothing about any Voodoo involved. This isn't the same as a guitar amp. Bias parameters va...

Re: Sing UP into the mic!
I've talked to trained singers (as in classical) about this, and the consensus has been that this is very BAD technique. It hurts the neck after a while, and does nothing to improve breathing, diaphragm strength, and so on. I imagine that it was done to improve bad posture and back alignment which w...

Re: track digital then to tape?
I've been involved in an A/B test of dumping from Pro Tools to 2" and straight Pro Tools, with both multitracks ran thru the same console (SSL), same fader positions, pans, and so on. My basic impression was disappointment with the 2" tracks. The difference was very slight. The 2" mix sounded slight...

Re: Some guys are just plain cool - Tchad Blake
ditto. hey smog, care to give us a few anecdotes from your conversation with t'chad? every froom/blake recording i've heard reminds me of red velvet curtains (like twin peaks). there's a really remarkable space around every sound that i've sought after ever since i got in this game. i read an interv...
