sorry. yes, 'the person speaking'. sometimes i'm sat on the outside of the vocal booth thinking, "oh god, what part of your body is hitting the mic stand now?"

I haven't used anything that compares with A3's spectral editing for removing clicks or even things not possible with automated processes, like removing someone's foot hitting the stand. Absolutely - I use M-Powered PT for work and play, work side of things being voice recordings mostly. Still end ...

question: shockmount history

Hmm, wasn't sure if this falls under recording techniques or gear really. My question is: when did people start making/using basket-type shockmounts for mics? Just started bugging me on the bus to work this morning. Been reading the recording the beatles book recently and any pics of mics are hard m...

I once returned to a studio having been out for lunch to find the producer of the session auto-tuning my vocals. I was only doing some little demos, he put forward the view that everyone else is doing it, so we'd better. I get the feeling that's magnified loads as you go further up the scale and the...

ooh, saw this in a shop the other weekend, was surprised as i didn't even realise it was available. it's way tiny - much smaller than you'd think from the photos.

would very much like to hear one.

I did just this once (Audition to PTLE), but strangely only have a very vague memory of how I did it, I guess because in the end I didn't redo the mix in PTLE as I was intending. Ah well. Anyway - Audition 2 adds a load of file/track export options over Audition 1.5 - you can just choose to export a...

if you're thinking 421/RE20, it might be worth thinking about the Heil PR30 + PR40 too. I'm just as likely to reach for my PR40 as I am my old telefunken branded MD421. I've had it up against an RE20 for comparison too, and I wasn't disappointed. Only caution I'd give is that the MD421 and RE20 are ...

What about this whole "Starbucks Records" type thing. The girls that work in the Starbucks I stop at on the way to work were groaning as that "Dance Tonight" one or whatever it's called, the one with the mandolin, came on for what must have been 100th time that week. I'm getting a weird level of ex...

if the bass sound is an ampeg-y type clanky sound with a lot of upper mid stuff going on, a crossover type approach for the bass can be good. split the bass into low and high, keep the real low end stuff central but move the high stuff out to the left or right to balance the guitar.

My place is just one room - I didn't have room for anything more at the end of my garden, so had to go for just the one soundproofed room. Before building my place I usually worked in rehearsal rooms with bands (in the same room as them) anyway, so I wasn't losing anything ... It's OK. The sheer jo...
