word, thanks for the advice everyone GCLIP is pretty much handling what i need, though there certainly isnt a whole lot of subtlely to using soft clipping on a final mix i usually avoid clipping things out but im doing a session that revolves mainly around the drummer (no guitars) and so i was pushi...

no its already tracked..i started tweaking the drum sub mix out w/ plug ins and outboard gear and its solid but what puts it over the edge is being crazy blown out in the mix. i cant get that same effect with any distortion plug ins and limiting kills the whole thing. however im cautious about havin...

clipping out my DAW drum buss: how to make it useable?

so i track everything to digital at real safe proper levels. i started running some chains on my drum kit submixes, trying to get them really blown out and kept manipulating things until i came up with a process to have it blown out, roomy, and still have good close hits too. it sounds ok at correct...

hmm, yeah i suppose i should try A/B'ing the two and see what works. it might be a little too unnatural for the kick drum to brutalize that sub if its a live drum kit. i mic'd the kit w/ a at3035 at the drummers head and shure 55 between the kick/snare and they sound pretty good on their own merits....

help working out the low end and live drums on my recording

i tracked 2 mpcs (8 outs) and a live drum kit (kick, snare, kick/snr, room) all sync'd up together. there is an mpc track on all the jams that is an 808 tuned and hitting, sometimes synth or lowpass sample. i want to build the mixes around the drums, getting the kit sounding real breakbeat like and ...

i cant really get into too much new psych/folk stuff but wow, i just peeped this stuff out and i think it sounds awesome! i really like the fuzz guitars...all the overdubbing leads and stuff sound really great. reminds of late 60's SF stuff. its always great when band finds the right recording gear ...

eq'ing/mastering my samples to sound good for live sound p.a

hi all after a few weeks of rehearsals with my band (we use live drums and mpc) we had to do quite a bit of tweaking our samples and loops to get them to sound decent through our powered monitors to start playing shows. we initially fleshed stuff out on the mpc's through studio speakers and they sou...

play a couple different venues in a row and you have to deal with all kinds of inconsistent problems..i just want something that sounds solid everywhere and the house pa can get a signal and be whatever. i like the jbl eons a lot, those qsc's seem nice too. their pa's always have a good sound. i thi...

prevent me from blowing out yet another guitar amp!

so i usually run samplers and synth gear into a mackie 12 channel mixer for my main setup. usually when im practicing i just run the mixer into a few guitar amps at the practice space. works out ok..nothings cranked too loud, ive learned to not overdrive low end sub bass into them or anything. when ...

advice on pressing some 7" singles w/ sampled content

hey guys im trying to press a real small run of a 7" single (just 100-200 copies) of a band im in. all the songs are built around a simple loop with tons of layers of other instruments and vocals playing on top and all mixed together. nothing is done in an obvious way on any of it but it is very not...

ah, it does seem like different grounds could be what it was. so the grd lift on my di box to the house pa would maybe be a solution.

what could cause this horrible hum in my monitors?

my band had a show recently and we use a lot of samplers/keys/line level stuff so we put it all in a mixer on stage and then use 2 mackie powered 15 monitors (which are very nice and loud) so we can hear ourselves on stage. the show we played was a little bigger room so we also tapped a line from ou...

why is the original whammy wh-1 so sought after?

i bought 2 of these years ago for cheap when a used store was going out of business. i randomly looked on ebay and see them going around 500 bucks! i didnt know they were rare or anything..i remember seeing nels cline use them at some free jazz shows and thinking they sounded cool. i noticed that th...
