You sure you don't have a nice, perhaps valuable, mic you are about to ruin? Many mics are first plugged into a separate power supply unit. Those types of mics, have connectors that don't look quite like a standard XLR connector.

I am almost %100 sure it's unrelated to OS. You can use it. It just means your computer will have to do more precise math, which of course pushes any computer more. I don't know if you will actually hear the difference though... 32 bit is pretty precise already.
