Most of the best sounding records I've worked on involved almost *zero* work from me. I've had the pleasure of working on mixes by some really amazing folks, and on such records, I mostly stand out of the way and let the mixes breathe as much as possible. There's much greater chance for things to ge...

Speaking as an ME... I only enjoy this job when I feel like I'm helping. The fear you describe seems a reaction to past mastering work that didn't help your mixing work. If it were helping, I would expect your initial reaction would be excitement rather than disappointment/fear. Most tracking/mix en...

As someone who has enjoyed working on a mix or two from your fine establishment, let me just say... FUCK that sucks. Hoping you get up and running again soon. I work with lots of people in and around Richmond, so if I get any great ideas about places to work, I'll let you know (maybe give Lance Koeh...

the guy doing the transfer is going to be making tweaks and mastering for the limitations of the physical medium. I don't think that it's necessarily his responsibility to make the collection of songs sound like a cohesive album. I'd never just send a collection of mixes to a vinyl manufacturing pl...

Great band! "Cathedrals" from "Through the Trees" is a genius lyric, as is "24-Hour Store" from "Singing Bones." And I agree that most of their records sound very good.

Yeah, pretty much a 1/2 second is standard here. Some clients have asked for much more. I don't really have a problem with that, but I try to never have it tighter than 1/4 of a second.

Sorry to sound ignorant, but I've always been a little suspicious of vinyl 'pre-mastering'? What exactly does this entail? If the master has been mixed and sequenced properly, does it really need an extra step before being cut? A good vinyl mastering suite will make decisions about eq and compressi...

Nice of those in this thread who mentioned me to do so! Appreciate the kind words. However, I should probably clarify that I do *not* have a lathe. Nonetheless, I do vinyl premastering all the time. Last month, about 15% of my projects involved vinyl premastering to some extent. I usually push clien...

Most of the people I know who are successful in engineering are (or were) also active participants in a music scene, usually as musicians. And so, the network of possible clients existed before they even began pressing record. Musicians network instinctively and naturally, and it's easy to migrate t...

Hey Matt! A doctor visit is more likely to help than any other method. Of course, seek recommendations for someone who will be sympathetic. I had the opposite problem -- low frequency loss in my right ear -- for several weeks a few years back. Very distressing days. The loss affected how I heard har...

Grails - "Burning Off Impurities" I'm partial to this one. :D great job on that one Carl. they're my favorite band right now. i was fortunate enough to see them play live in Brattleboro, VT a couple weeks ago and my girlfriend and i spoke with Emil for quite a while about music and recording. hell ...
