Re: Recording Rock Bands Without a Bass Player
I had a band come in once that had a guy sing the bass parts in to an octave pedal. Afterwards we'd fuzz it up a little and jack up the low end. And it sounded really cool.

Re: eq and compression
Sayer, You make some really good points. And in a perfect world, every bit of what you say is 100% correct every time. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we sometimes run in to clients who kinda' have this need to run the show ... aren't very trusting in others ... and basically view you as the...

Re: eq and compression
One approach might be to just go with some of the more tried and true methods that always seem to net at least acceptable results. It's probably when we start overthinking things that we get in to trouble. If you can develop one or two methods that work well for you 80-90% of the time, and you just ...

Re: eq and compression
AndyG brings up the eternal dilemna of tracking bands. :D What I've learned to do is just explain to them at the outset that "for every extra hour we spend sound-checking, we will save 1 1/2 to 2 hours in mixing time, trying to fix things." That way, you're speaking their language, and actually tell...

Re: I hate all the reverb plugs or hardware I have ever hear
The covolution reverbs are about the best thing going.
If used correctly, they're the most viable substitute for an actual room there is. Still not completely ideal, but pretty damn close in certain situations.

I think schools like Full Sail perform a very valuable service to our modern society.

Hmm. This gives me a business idea: How about "Send Condoms to Costa Rica?"
That might be pretty good.

Re: This is a cheap good snare sound.
I guess what you're liking, then, is the sound of a microphone's circuitry clipping ... because there's no way the ecm-8000 can handle that kind of SPL up close. It just isn't designed to handle it.

I think 57's sound like ass on overheads. People who use them that way should be taken out and shot.

Why would I do something if I knew it sucked ? ? ?
What the hell kinda' question is that?
Come work with me. I'm a great engineer. Except for when I do ____ . I really suck balls when I do that.
But otherwise, yea, I'm the shit ... when I'm not purposely doing stuff that sucks, that is.

However i feel that i should have known a little more than i did at graduation time over a year ago. SO now i am taking it upon myself to try and learn what i feel i didnt get from school on my own ... That's certainly not anything unique to just the audio industry. In fact, those words you utter a...

Re: moving on up
I kinda' look at it like this ... if you're going in to business for yourself, and that's been your goal all along, then it doesn't really matter what kind of qualifications you have. So long as you're able to get done what you need to get done in order to make your business work for you. From there...
