Re: Minimalist micing thoughts
I've said this before, but having a LOT of room sound in your drums has become something that will make the recordings of the late 90's and early 00's very identifiable in the way heavily gated toms and snares make you think of the 80's. I think you're right to an extent. But I don't think it's the...

Re: Internship Questions
Take whatever you can get. And work your ass off. Don't expect to make any money at it at first. If you need money -- like to live and stuff, then you need some sort of backup plan. Wait tables . . . become a stripper or a gigalo. Or you could marry in to money. Target spoiled rich chicks who want t...

Re: B.L.U.E. Ball & Robbie
I mentioned how I didn't like the weighted knob that could accidently be changed by a bump, and he simply said, "Don't bump it," Actually, this guy sounds great. :D I wanna' buy him a beer. That's a great answer. If I were in his shoes, and someone came along to my booth trashing my product, I prob...

Re: Throwing in the towel?
Consider moving to another city. SF is a bitch to stay afloat financially, and IMHO (I do travel to SF regularly for business) there are much better cities for music than the Bay Area. [/ducks] To name a few: Chicago . . . Chicago is pretty tough, too. Besides, we have enough guys barely staying af...

Re: REAMPING: What is the main reason you REAMP???
That was not reamping, that was chambering, and to use a term loosely makes waters down the meaning. That would be like saying "compressing" when you were gating something, or calling a gate a "fader." My rant is just so we are clear, and not just heping to spread misinformation to someone who may ...

Re: what do you do when bad word is spread about you
Just be professional about it. Be calm and collected . . . never get on the offensive. Apologize, offer to rectify the situation at no cost, etc. Basically just show a ton of class in the matter, and that you're not going to stoop to their level and badmouth them. Keep taking the high road, and even...

Re: The Superficial importance of a studio's image
It's only sneaky / dishonest if you advertise yourself as a "studio." It's totally legit if you advertise yourself as an Engineer. Better yet an Engineer "with a studio." . . . or several. Hell, if someone calls and wants to see "your studio" or wants pricing on "your studio," ask them: "Which one? ...

Re: The Superficial importance of a studio's image
Alright . . . this is how you do it: If you live in a big market, then chances are there will be at least a few studios that you can rent out and freelance at . . . and chances are at least one of them will look impressive enough. Have prospective clients meet up with you at that studio . . . quote ...

Re: bellari mp-110 any good?
I've pretty much done as much modding as I can justify on this thing. :D And the output still clips just a tad too easily. It would be an extremely cool and useful piece of gear if that could be addressed easily. Anyone out there know anything about how to pad the signal a bit going to the output st...

Re: bellari mp-110 any good?
When you turn the gain knob and get to about 3 o'clock, it goes into all-out fuzz mode. It's a dramatic change, like at 2:45, it's just a slightly overdriven tube sound, and then at 3, it's super clipped-out distortion. The problem with the Bellari 110 and 220 is that it starts clipping the output ...

Re: Free Studio
I just think you have to try and personalize this as much as possible if you want to get a relevent answer. I mean . . . if you have a day job, and I'm assuming you do: 1) Do you think getting paid for whatever it is you currently do for a living is important? (In other words, would you work at Burg...

Great Idea
Just tell him you are raising your prices. If he is willing to pay the higher price to record with you, then would it make it any more worth it??? Yea, I think that's a great idea. You could even build this in to a new rate card. Explain to him that your rates are $X / hour (or whatever) for cool p...

Re: I sold a song on iTunes!!!
That's right--my hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars of investment in my home studio has finally paid off--because someone, somewhere has bought one of my songs on iTunes! If you think that digital distribution isn't the wave of the future, well, you're wrong--and I've got fifty-nine cents t...
