Re: Beefy room mic of choice
I actually think the CAD E-series and M-series condensers are very much on the "beefy" side. The M-179 always seems to impart a nice, hefy image on drum overhead duties, and especially on toms. They make great room mics as well. The continuously variable polar pattern is a nice feature in that regard.

JBL / UREI 7110 Compressor / Limiter
I'm selling a JBL / UREI compressor Limiter. These things are pretty sweet. I've heard they've been developing sort of a cult following, and that a lot of people like them and are looking for them. If anyone wants to contact me about it, feel free to do so. Email: snailinajar@yahoo.com (Don't bother...

Re: Attention anyone who knows anything about mastering...
If you have to be the one to do it and there's no way around it whatsoever . . . Then at least give the material a rest for a week or so. Get the songs out of your head. Divorce yourself from the project as best you can. Listen to a bunch of good reference material. And take a stab at it with fresh ...

So I guess what you're saying is that an idiot who doesn't know what he's doing can screw something up.
I think that's what you're saying.
I don't know what it has to do with preamps, but I can dig it. Don't let idiots record you. It works for me.

I believe Tchad Blake is also a big fan of this technique. You could check in on just about everything he's produced/engineered.

Re: Thank you all who believed in me.
I tried raising a dollar from everyone , with no success. I offered to write everybody a song about them for $40 . No success. I strived to gather together a group of 6 people for a good group rate (which I could have afforded a bit more), as well as getting a few other texans to drive together and...

Dude . . . two words: treat it. Or consider a change in venue.

Re: better mixes for dense rock music
I'm voting "other." This type of thing is mostly an arrangement / tracking issue than anything else. During pre-production, you need to be more mindful of the type of tones you're using, and how the various tones are interacting with one another. When mixing two guitar parts together, for example, y...

Re: cat piss alert!
I don't know if this would work on cat piss or not . . . But tomato juice is often used to get rid of all types of odors. Ironically enough, it's often used to get the skunk smell out of cats / dogs after they've been sprayed. You'd think if it works on skunks, it might work on cat piss. Might be wo...

Re: Audio Upgrades... heard of this?
Jim Williams (Audio Upgrades) is a very well-respected designer/engineer. To my knowlege, he's just a one-man operation, so I don't suppose he has time to answer every single inquiry right away.
His work is supposedly top-notch, and he comes very highly recommended.

Re: tell me what you think of my situation
Just to chime in my two cents . . . I think you should look at it like you did your job. Unless you're working for major labels recording at CR or Rax Trax, your job, ultimately, is to make some guy listen to it and say: "This is great stuff. Let's sign you to a contract and have it re-done by Joe B...

Re: How do you deal with ignorance (including your own)?
What you're going through is a natural learning process. Just keep practicing, refining your skills, and get as much experience as you can. Don't get too frustrated over people who complain about everything . . . and don't get too high on yourself from people who like everything. Be your own worst c...
