I would think that the insert would *always* be at line level, while an in-line compressor will be running at whatever level you feed it. This would of course be line level when mixing from tape or DAW, or using line level instruments, but if you were feeding a bass or other low-level signal direct ...

For a carbon mic, you put a battery in series with the mic. Then you put a capacitor from one side of the mic to the XLR pin 1, and a wire from the other side of the mic to XLR pin 2.
