I'm listening on headphones. Definitely mostly mono. I think any of the VERY subtle stereoization I (think) I can hear is mainly happening in lower frequencies and sounds like spill into the left guitar mic. Besides the reverb. You can also definitely hear the small size of the room it was recorded ...

I totally feel you on this. I can't say I've made a "career" or "profession" out of making recordings, but it has certainly been a big part of how I understand myself and how I spend my time. And there's always the lurking feeling that I ought to be doing something differently in order to more close...

(psych prog exp) - The Straw that Broke the Camel's Heart
http://thestevedores.bandcamp.com/ I have been working with this band, these friends of mine, forever. If you like what you hear, let 'em know! Co-produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by YrsTrly. (Should sound like it was recorded in a Giant Eagle under full fluorescent lighting). Thanks for l...

Ah, I hear what you mean. But I don't think it has so much to do with the balance between the Mid and Side components. It's more that the guitars just sound way *closer* than the drums--an illusion no doubt enhanced psycho-acoustically by the stereo recording. I would try gently compressing them and...

The Kissing Club - Tapdancer
Hi everybody! I hope you'll all take a listen to this record I made with Jacob Miller this past winter. It's called Tapdancer and we're very proud of it. You can stream/buy it on Bandcamp , or preview/buy it just about anywhere such things are normally done (Amazon, iTunes, and though we'd rather yo...

There are, of course, plenty of non-disco examples of a disco-type drum sound. Few, of course, match the glory of "MacArthur's Park". But I mean, like R&B and funk. Black music and its blue-eyed exponents. Like my favorite, David Bowie. Like, all of Low , the kick is sort of patting you on the foreh...

When I play around with MS in mixing, I typically encode a LR signal to MS, then treat the mid and side separately (eq compression, effects, whatever!), recombining to LR when I'm through. Mastering engineers will sometimes use these techniques, but in less-than-subtle hands, it can totally wrangle ...

Do you have a contact mic? With a sensitive one I saw one guy who turned a cactus into a cool sounding percussion instrument. ... Just did some googling. I guess the mic'd cactus is a John Cage thing... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogladnqVqSM I couldn't find the guy I was thinking of. Maybe it ...

It has not been my experience that super-directional microphones (like ribbons or hyper-cardioids) work well close-mic'ing acoustic bass instruments. 1) Because they are so directional, they are usually not going to get an accurate picture of all the different frequencies emanating from different di...

Sorry, I'll try to answer Q2 now... :) Generally speaking, tuning affects sustain insofar as you have both heads. At the same time, this also alters the overtone structure of the composite sound of a drum, and hence its perceived pitch. This is all voodoo except to physicists and DRUMMERS. So go rea...

Never having had the luxury of my own control room... or rather, preferring to be in the same room as the music while working with the musicians/music... I've come to like setting up mics on drums with my Etymotic headphones. It's like having a control room in your head! Anyway, it makes setting up ...
