One of the only drum sounds that makes me go "damn, what is going on here?" each time. Probably something to do with total isolation and general awesomeness. I also love giant, wooden snares.

I use Etymotic headphones. If you need more isolation, you can wear more isolation over them. Except for the very lowest frequencies, which get transmitted through your body anyway, I've found I can have my head inside of a kick drum and still get an excellent sense of the sound. It also protects yo...

I've always had an appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into making recordings that sound like his, especially with the technology available at the time they were made. I also find him extremely likable in interviews, very pragmatic and humble... the same qualities I appreciate in Hugh Padgh...

Well, see, it's more like I'm not yet a real fretless bassist because I'm still more of a cellist. Having never had any real relation to the guitar...

Is there an entirely different narrative if you start out fretless?

Regarding all this about muted vs ringing and so on (note length): to quote my college conductor, "mit Geschmeckt" (to be said with a Talmudic shrug).

Just to be clear, I mean like, higher-than-CD-quality, with your audio interface running at the same clock speed. I dunno, in theory it should be closer-to-the-studio sounding than the days of yore (vinyl, tapes, and yea, even CDs wrangled into existence with early digital technology...) Vinyl's sti...

hi-def listening

Whenever possible, I've been doing digital downloads from hdtracks.com and let me tell you, it's MINDBLOWING to listen to classic records like this. One thing that has me super-excited is how fresh, open, and dynamic so much of it sounds. Like, the way stuff sounds on first playback. And before you ...

Calling it a "schtick" (the Afro-futurist Egyptian thing) is missing the point and you will meet people who will take offense to this. Anyway, Mr. Tchicai just passed away unfortunately, but I was recently turned onto to the New York Art Quartet. I got to do a reference mix of a live performance of ...

AKG 414 / Peluso Interview

It was so interesting to read "Behind the Gear" from #96 where Mr. Peluso explains that AKG 414s have an "ethereal high end" because of the way the diaphragms are voiced. The only time I got to use 414s was in college and recorded my first full-length record. I used them all over the friggin' place ...

Also, regarding the buzzing, I really think that somebody should invent a portable Faraday cage for recording. It'd make a million pesos.

^^^^^ Haha, I think fretless nerds (which I am mere months away from fully qualifying for, membership card is in the mail...) refer to the "baaaaaaa-ooooooiiii-ng" sound simply as "mwah", and there are endless discussion threads on basstalk.com about how get it or enhance it. In my recent experience...

Overtones overtones overtones. All of the suggestions here are spot-on and are related in that they implicitly instruct you to bring out the rich overtones that characterize the cello. Low cut + compression, distortion, etc. You've already recorded the parts, I guess, but room mics definitely help, ...
