This was recorded on a 388 then moved over to ProTools for mixing (and a few overdubs).

By the way, the Tascam 388 is the finest machine ever invented. It make dialysis machines look lame by comparison.

Re: guitar thru a reel to reel...

Will it allow you to overdrive it? or does it give you more of a clean tone?

guitar thru a reel to reel...

I've seen photos of people playing guitar thru old, tube reel to reels using the built in speaker. Does anyone here do this? What brands are good for doing this?

Re: Anyone using a 1/4 TRS patchbay?

I only thing I have to add is to be careful with Phantom power. Always turn it off BEFORE plugging or un-plugging a cable.

Learned that one the hard way.

Re: smallest recorder for a good $

An iPod will only record at 8bit. It sounds pretty terriable.

MiniDisk is pretty sweet for the size.

Re: Reviving Poorly Recorded Acoustic

To fix this recently, I recorded a second track of acustic guitar. Then I mixed it into the original track just enough to fatten up the tone. But not enough to over-power the original track. It didn't fix the problem but it helped alot.

Re: Recording Banjo

I recorded a banjo a few months ago. We just used a SM57. We didn't bother trying any other mics because banjos are kind of loud and cut thru the mix pretty well. Sounded fine to me.

Re: Good 2nd hand mixers to look out for

The only Tascam mixer I've used is a Tascam 388. It's a mixer and an 8 track reel to reel. They usualty cost about $500 but it's a really great mixer with Sweepable Hi, low and mids. The only bummer is that it's only two busses so it can be a little limited in that respect. BUT... you can record to ...

Re: What do you hate about modern records?

I wish that modern records sounded more like people playing music together (ie the new Niell Young album) instead of "perfect" representations of idea of the song. Does that make any sense?

Re: How to find good mic sounds when recording solo

I record alone almost all of the time. One of the best things I ever did was to set up my recording rig so that I could reach almost everything from a sitting position with a guitar on my lap. I don't often mess with different mics when I'm recording alone. I adjust mic placement with headphones on....

Re: what was Yoko's deal???

This may sound really bad, but John Lennon died at a good time. If he had gone on, he would have turned into a turd. Every time I hear his solo stuff, I cringe (With the exception of a few songs like "imagine") He had gone disco. And once you've gone disco, you can't come back. Yoko on the other han...
