Re: Mic's for recording guitar.

57s and 58s have the same capsule and transformer. The ball end of the 58 makes it so you can't get as close. Less proximity = less proximity effect. Why 58s cost more than 57s is a mystery to me.

On another note, 545s are essentially the same as sm57s. Same with 544s if you switch them to low Z.

Re: Recording djembe

An alternative to micing up into the bottom is to not use a rug, and have the mic about a foot above and a foot back from the drum pointed down at a 45 degree angle. Gets nice bass. I'd do the same as others have suggested with the top. A fun alternative to the top mic, but one that wouldn't be good...

Re: Should I Get Pro Tools or Vegas?

I've tried a bunch of different recording programs but all I use now is Samplitude. It's got a bit more of a learning curve than some others, but it does everything I want it to do.

Re: Remember how the Modest Mouse song was in that Nissan ad

You watch too much tv. :P My middle school students wouldn't know Led Zeppelin at all if Rock and Roll wasn't in that Cadillac commercial. At least they waited a couple decades before selling out. Bands today cash in the first chance they get. Not that I blame 'em too much. Eating ramen gets old qui...

Re: SD And Electret Condenser Microphones??

AT 3035 is a large diaphragm electret. There are probably quite a few others, but it's unlikely you'll see the word 'electret' in their descriptions or spec sheets. Most people associate electret with cheap or poor quality, so on medium quality mics they steer clear of the word for marketing reasons...

Re: SD And Electret Condenser Microphones??

I think the reason there hasn't been much response is that there's as much if not more difference between mics of the same category as there is between categories. And as has been said before, both true condensers and electrets can have large or small diaphragms. It would be interesting to see what ...

Re: Tape OP: Omni article

I took the capsule out of a shure 515 unidyne B I got for 5 bucks. There aren't any holes there. The holes to block are the ones on the outside of the mic, behind the capsule. I did that, but it sounds like ass. Lots of feedback running through an amp, and really crappy response (much crappier than ...

Re: bass cab mics

I do that when I need a kit-- track each drum separately. It's harder to do than you might think, but mixing is easy.

I've been using two amps for bass simultaneously, a guitar amp and a bass amp. The bass amp with a 664 and a U III sm57 on the guitar amp. Compress and combine, and it sounds BIG.

Re: Tape OP: Omni article

I'd be interested to find out the results if you do it, especially if you have a 635a or RE50 to compare it to. That's not a 57 in the pic. It says hyper-cardioid. Does anyone know how to pop out the capsule from a 57 without damaging it? I'm curious about trying this too. I've got four 57s and vari...

Re: Compare these two recordings... (Please!)

It's hard to compare when one is mastered and the other isn't. The snare in particular sounds crisper on "sick". The cymbals sound almost like a shaker to me and dominate the high end IMO. This is more true of "sick" but is in both. It's difficult to tell which differences are due to compression and...

Re: Guerilla Omni Recipe

what about dynamics? I'd like to hear the results of a shoot-out between a 635a and a "guerilla" 57. I'd do it, but I don't have a 635a to compare to. I would do it with duct tape or electrical tape so it's not permanent. Seems to me it should block the holes as good as epoxy. What does this do to t...

no control room blues

Anyone got some advice for someone recording at home trying to find the right mics, placement, etc but has no control room, and more often than not, is the performer? It's hard to hear differences through headphones when you're playing through an amp in the same room. Is there any other way besides ...

Re: Getting rid of unwanted bleed after Tracking

Well, I don't know if this will help because I don't know what you're recording into. If you're mixing digitally, there are noise reduction options that might work. In Samplitude (what I use), you can select a clip to represent "noise": I think the function is called "get noise". Find a spot in the ...

Re: DIN connectors?

the problem being that most times the connector is set inside the mic and not easy to swap out. On most of the mics I have, there's a screw at the bottom. Undoing the screw lets you pull the connector out far enough to access the wires. These include AKG, Shure, EV (all dynamics) and Teledyne (elec...

Re: DIN connectors?

Why bother with weird cables you can only use for one mic? It's usually pretty easy to rewire to XLR. I don't know the wiring for 3 pin DIN but I've done it for 4pin (amphenol?) in old Shure and EV mics and it's not hard. I'm sure someone here knows the pin assignments for the DIN plugs. Maybe there...
