Just got a 664 and rewired it for low impedance XLR. It was only $15 on the ebone so I thought I'd give it a shot.
It sounded like ass until I figured out the problem: the diaphragm was pushed in. I covered one of the vents and blew in the other, the diaphragm popped up and now it sounds fine.

field trip: Brooklyn
I teach music to middle school kids at MS 246 in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, NY (near the Church st. exit on the 2 and 5 trains). We've done some 8 track recording on my Digitech bnx-3 (has a built-in jam man), but I'd like to take them to see a professional recording studio. Something close by w...

Re: counterpart for the SM57?
I like mine, but it's the only LD condenser I've got, so don't have any basis for comparison other than dynamics and electrets. Is it "all that"? Beats me, but it sounds good to me. I got to borrow a Neumann once which blew it away, but what does that say?

I use a PPA LD-1 a few feet back. They're $100 new at pacific pro audio.

Shure Unidyne III for trade
It's a 544 that I rewired for low impedance XLR. The 544 is the same as the 545 except it comes wired for high z. Unidyne IIIs are essentially the same as sm57s (some unidyne IIIs are sm57s, I've got one and I'm keeping it :D) I've got two of these, only need one. Could do ebone, but thought it woul...

Re: infrasound/ the "brown note"
If we could just figure out the resonant frequency of the clitoris, we'd all be billionaires (among other benefits).

Re: infrasound/ the "brown note"
If you could use one of those in reverse, it would make a killer shotgun mic.

Re: anybody ever heard of these mics..?
I was looking at the "joined" date.
I saw another one on the web, similar, but a straight cylinder (no head). The guy said on his site it was a semi-pro mic that goes for under $100.
The one I got comes with specs, so I'll find out about it when it gets here.

infrasound/ the "brown note"
I'm sure many of you have heard the urban legend about "the brown note". Can this really be done? What is the frequency?
Also, check out the "feraliminal lycanthropizer". http://www.physicsroom.org.nz/log/archi ... raliminal/
It's a hoax, but cool anyway.

Re: anybody ever heard of these mics..?
It's been a year since your original post... have you had a chance to play around with it? Seems like it would be good as an overhead.

Wow! Forty posts makes me an ass engineer!
Does that mean I have to start doing weird things with sm57s?

Finally figured out what this mic is good for: spoken word. I picked up one of these for ten bucks at the rummage sale in the East Village a year or two ago and couldn't figure out what to use it on. Nobody ever talks about this mic- is it less common than a 666 or 664? I was setting up to record a ...
