audio media research (amr) ero-10 mic
Anyone know anything about it? Just got one off ebay (not sure why). It's an analyser mic, so I figured it must be an electret condenser, but the guy insisted it's a dynamic. Supposedly flat response.

geeky transformer question
Can I use a step-up transformer from a microphone in an instrument? If you had a guitar that has a weak signal, could you use a transformer to give it a little boost? After all, a pickup isn't much different from a dynamic mic element. I've been trying this, and I thought it was working, until I set...

Re: unidyne III sm57 vs. sm57
I'm curious about the transformer too, that could make a big difference. I took apart an old radio shag mic from the 60s that wasn't working and took out the transformer. It was wired in the mic as a step-down, but I put it in one of my instruments that had a somewhat weak output as a step-up. It so...

Re: unidyne III sm57 vs. sm57
ape 32, was that the one that was listed as a "unidyne II" ? I was checking that out, too. The ones I got were unbelievably cheap-- I guess people were scared off by the goosenecks. Smoother, yes. Less grainy-- that's a good way to put it. Like having a higher sample rate in digital. I may be wrong ...

unidyne III sm57 vs. sm57
I just picked up a Unidyne III sm57, not a 545, but a sm57. These were the first to have the sm57 name. They were made in the US (current ones are made in Mexico). Does anyone here have experience with these? In what ways (if any) do they differ from the current sm57s? To my ears, they are a bit smo...

Re: dynamic mic diaphragm
Thanks Jeff, but, um, did you read the question? I know how dynamic and condensor mics work, I just want to know the thickness of dynamic mics (in general; I know there must be a range). I'd also like to know what type of plastic they are. It's well known that condensor mics use mylar, the companies...

dynamic mic diaphragm
How thick is it (generally)? I've heard that condenser diaphragms are usually from about 3 to 6 microns thick. What about dynamic mic diaphragms? Also, it's not hard to find info on materials for condenser mic diaphragms-- they're gold-sputtered mylar or sometimes a mix of mylar and aluminum (kind o...

Re: You know what mic is the biggest piece of shit?
I've got a Pacific Pro Audio LD-1. I like it. It's the only large diaphragm condenser I've ever used so I don't really have a reference to compare it to, but it sounds nice to me. They also have a tube version for $300 that's multi-pattern.

stupid question PZM/boundary
What's the difference between a PZM and a boundary mic? Does it mean the same thing?

Re: cheap telefunken mics
My td-16s were $10.50 for the pair ($7 shipping). I've seen other td-series mics on German ebay for under 2 euros. Most of them won't ship outside Germany though. It's hard to imagine them going up too high in price-- they were so common (at least in Germany) at the time, plus most engineers would b...

Re: cheap telefunken mics
Tiger vomitt, what do you use them on? From the freq response curve, I would guess they'd be pretty good on guitar cabs. Anybody know anything about Vega mics? I almost bought this group of 5 old Vegas on ebay, but the price went higher than I was willing to risk on an unknown. I know they make wire...

cheap telefunken mics
There are a lot of cheap Telefunkens out there from the 60s that were made for use with tape recorders. Some of them are the td16, td21, td107, td12, td26 and td30. I just bought a pair of td-16s from ebay, haven't got them yet. I found a frequency response curve for them here: http://grassomusic.de...
