Re: Mic Pre Question
the setting of the gain depends entirely on the knob sitting in front of the knob on the preamp

Re: What are people using for Track Sheets For DAW Recording
specially when you hit that 32 char limit in PT :) my technique is still evolving, but I tend to keep a big A4 notebook for each project and keep spurious notes in that. I've also taken to just keeping a blank text editor up and type notes as they occur, also use the comment field in PT a bit for re...

Re: Recording Rock Bands Without a Bass Player
I've recorded a few local guitar + drums only bands and came to the conclusion that they don't have bass so why try and "substitute" at all. I know it can initially feel a little weird mixing without bass but like many have mentioned it really does open up a world of interesting options at mix-time....

blue, but yea, i have had a lot of offers to record other people. this means needing monitors, and some nicer gear here and there, something to mixdown to, some nicer/more versatile mics, etc etc. Oh gear lust .. and its wonderful ability to force you to put things off :) You sound really keen and ...

Oh, wing is just showing off his uncanny and utterly maddening ability to post without increasing his post count. hehe .. I did a quick calculation ... Wing - joined 2/05/2003, today is 17/12/2004 ie. 595 days gives you an average of 8.4 posts for every single day of that period :) Now if someone c...

Not trusting my intution/ears ... has bit me in the ass more times than I care to count. It's one of those legacy things when you start out working in REALLLY crappy studios as a young AE .. you think your mix is rockin' but it's sucking so you start to lose faith. Then you move up to bigger and bet...

Re: vintage portable home electric fan organ history
Funnily enough they are massively popular in the local indie rock scene here in Australia. I was doing FOH for a band last week who had no less than THREE on stage for one tune (*ugh*, and have recorded a few in my time as well. If it's cheap enough grab it, they are inredibly fun and vibey instrume...

Re: Mixing out of the box PTs output levels
All faders at unity - at unity PT isn't applying any calculations to the signal at all, ie. the audio file is being played directly to the output as is (assuming there's no plugins inserted). If you drop or increase a fader's gain PT will need to perform a calculation on every sample of the audio fi...

Re: Time stretching-phase problems
With pitch'n'time at the top of the audiosuite dialog box is a button "Mono Mode" which you can click to "Stereo Mode". I'm pretty sure if you have it set to "Stereo Mode" even when selecting more than 2 tracks it will phase lock the time expansion between all the tracks. Actually the button may swi...

Re: Does the stock ProTools reverb suck or do I?
If you're expecting silky smooth halls and realistic rooms you're gonna be disappointed. If you want something with character it's great! I love it on snares using the Ambient or Non-Lin presets then slamming it into a compressor. Sounds great! I've also loved it on handclaps and guitars too :) If s...

Re: Good Delay for Live Vocals
I'm so glad someone brought up the effectron! My effectron II (adm1024) is still a staple in my personal rack I take to shows when i'm doing FOH. My first introduction to it was from Jonathon Kreniek who was doing FOH for Trans Am in australia many years ago. I was doing supports and got to get my g...

Re: Drum Micing: Set up order and phase checks...
I've generally started with overheads first and spend as much time as necessary to basically get the kit sounding as awesome as possible with just the oh's. Then i'll start getting my kick mic(s) up and will move them and experiment with polarity until I find the point where the kick sounds massive....
