Re: What's the scene like in central Illinois?
peoria is 30 miles west of bloomington, and is where my studio is. www.tonelabstudios.com anyway, the scene here is always trying to get off the ground and be influential...but struggles quite a bit. i've worked in chicago and can say that the local scene is much more down to earth here and there ar...

buying analogue tape
i bought an otari mx5050 1/2" 4-track machine recently and i'm looking for info on where to buy tape and maybe a few hints on the differences between different kinds of tape. also how many times do you folks record to each reel before it's "spent"?

Re: Lofi Mics and Techniques
i agree...it' is more about production and experimentation than buying fifty shitty mic's. abuse your mid-range; use no low's at all; set up an omni and record at louder volumes...the list goes on and on. as always, i'll say what everyone around here says, be creative and take the time to stop and l...

Re: Room Mic Phasing Question
i've had good fortune with this setup: measure the distance between your overheads, or front alligned stereo pair, and you room mic. take the distance in feet and multiply by 1.1 ms (speed that sound travels: 1 foot=1.1ms) . next delay your overheads by this many ms. add a decent early reflection re...

Re: Recording Guitars
140 db is enough to kill you.....not really, but if you are able to be in the same room and actually hear the headphones on your head, your gt will be just fine. btw, i'm totally smitten with my pair of am51's (pre-alesis). how do you like the tube66 ?

Re: Recording vocals @ home
if you're recording anyone besides yourself, keep in mind the enviroment surrounding the singer, maybe even for yourself. the perfromance is often directly related to the performers sub-concious comfort level.(i.e. bright light, no groove.) and of course, listen until you are happy, and it never hur...

frequency analyzer
anyone know of a very inexpensive freq. analyzer? i'd like to train my ear a little better on specific freq.'s and be able to "at a glance" identify problem freq.'s. note: i do not use a computer in my studio. ( couple of 01v's and fostex d-160) thanks!

james iha "let it come down"
does anyone know how this album was recorded? i love the detail and warmth, and the way everything interacts. all of the tones and signals seem to "melt" into each other.

otari mx-5050 4-trk 1/2"
i just purchased this machine (otari mx-5050 4-trk 1/2") from a radio station in canada. i've yet to use tape to mix down to in my studio. i'm wondering about sync (say submixing only drums) and about maintaining the heads and such. any other general exp. with this or similar machines would be helpf...
