This is good? Sounds like midi to me... No feel whatsoever. -Jake Yeah they sound pretty heavily quantized to me. The parts are extremely impressive though! The drums are SO DRY and have so little decay. Its interesting because on many of their other songs I always assumed the drums were samples be...

I just use a super cheap ART 2 channel phantom thing for the rare time I need to power a mic going into a pre w/o phantom, like the scully pre's or an old thingy of some sort... I also use it when I am using pre's from an old 4 track... I've used these boxes, too, and they do just what they say the...

Man, Joel said it really well and I am 100% in agreement with his views! I'll try to answer this though... 2) What is the bare minimum investment required to get a HD3 rig that is fitted with enough plug ins, etc. to make it attractive to clients? Do clients really expect PT in a commercial place? D...

Honestly, the biggest challenge is going to be the drums! My recommendation would be to keep things simple and make sure you have close mics on as many drums as you can afford to put them on. I think a really "safe" way to go with overheads is to do an XY pair about 2.5 to 3 feet directly over the s...

Why don't you mix OTB and print stems of your mix (Ie: stereo drums, bass, gtrs etc) so that you can make changes if you need to? It's the best of both worlds. I've just gone back to analog mixing after a year ITB. It's so much better and more fun. There's a performance element involved and you get...

The other difference maker is maintenance. You'll notice lately that a lot people have maintenance issues- certainly with analog tape decks, but more recently, lots of threads with glitchy analog boards. Yeah this is a GREAT point! I remember at AES a few years back Klaus Heyne was saying in a semi...

Most of the biggest mixers in the world work primarily on NS10s, so I wouldn't consider those the weak link. One thing you might want to find out is WHICH NS10s you have. Do you have the original ones, or the Studios? The originals ones are quite a bit different sounding and can have the crossover m...

I used to have a 1201--they are cool! I just scored a Beyer M201 for $119 from Music Go Round--it's in the mail. Can't wait to get it on the snare drum. GREAT score on the m201. I love those mics for just about anything. I have used it on a number of vocalist who LOVED singing though it. It ...

I just picked up a Zoom 1201. Its great for those Massive Attack-esque long, spacey verbs. This guy has got some great samples of it here:
