Re: Shockmount elastic replacement
The Scunci brand hair ties come in quite a variety of thicknesses and elasticities so you should be able to find something appropriate for your shockmount. They come about 20 or so to a card (depending on thickness) for between 2 and 3 bucks.

The centers of the diaphragms *are* crossed.

Re: MIDI is Hell
Most USB/Serial adapters don't work with MIDI. Unless gPort says specifically that your model does, it won't.

Re: DIY ribbon mic guys...
This kind of impedance conversion is also necessary for moving coil phonograph cartridges. There are plenty of pre-pre-amp or "head" amp circuits kicking around for this based on common-base circuits. A lot of these circuits artificially raise the input impedance so as to not load the coil, but it s...

Re: No MXL close mic'ing
I'll second what psychicoctopus said about the electronics. I've been modding a couple MXL1006s, and while the basic design is OK, it's only OK if you hand-select the semiconductors, especially the FET, which they don't. The 1006 uses a basic FET phase splitter and the two I have just didn't have en...

Re: Drumset that flares out at the bottom of each drum...
Somebody also made the flared horn part that you could attach to regular (single headed) drums. Might have been Pearl, but I'm not sure.

North drums. Sounded as bad as you can imagine.

Re: impedance question
Put the pot across pins 2 and 3, parallel to the voltmemeter, not in series. Right. The pot forms a voltage divider with the output impedance. (Think of the mic as a generator with Zout being an impedance in series with its output.) You could also do this with, say, a 1kOhm resistor across the outp...

Re: Tracking just the BASS to cassette, the rest to digi!
Again, that is all very bad. Flea=bad, Victor= very bad. I won't bash on Jaco 'cuz he was a genius, but he sure inspired a lot of unnecessary bass wankery by guys who don't understand the musicality behind the chops. The funkiest bass players I've heard almost never slap- that's just for music stor...

Re: impedance question
Put the mic in front of a speaker playing a steady 1kHz tone. Use an AC voltmeter to measure the output. Put a variable resistance across the output and adjust until the voltage drops by half. Measure the value of the variable resistance. That's the impedance of your mic.

Re: slingerland marching snare revisited
All those holes in the strainer are for stringing gut snares. To use metal snares, run nylon cord through two of the holes and tie on the snare unit. Getting the knot in the right place can be tricky.
