Re: Getting phase right on a drum kit
Another question. Are low-frequency sound waves so long that moving the kick mic a little bit is not likely to yield any real change in the phase relationships with, say, the overheads? Or am I off-bass here?

Re: Getting phase right on a drum kit
So basically what we're saying here is that getting the relative polarity right on a multi mic'ed kit is MUCH, MUCH more important than absolute polarity on any one drum.

Re: Getting phase right on a drum kit
* Polarity refers to the positive and negative of a balanced signal. It is a binary situation. Reversing the polarity switches positive and negative. Phase, however is more intense than + or - and is time based. There are times when reversing the polarity isn't enough of a fix and that's when its t...

Re: Newb appreciation
I have been thrilled at the responses to my questions and feel like I am learning so much from some really knowledgeable people. There is always so much to learn and that's one thing I love about recording. Plus this gives me a great forum, as my wife is tired of hearing about this shit.

Getting phase right on a drum kit
I have struggled with this for years. I now understand the concepts pretty well, but am still unsure of the proper process. Here is what I do. Any advice would be appreciated. 1. Set up overhead mics. If not using X/Y, make sure both mics are equidistant from the middle of the snare drum. 2. Set up ...

Choosing drum overheads for small room
I have a session coming up in a small, well-treated room with an arched ceiling. The drums are in a treated corner -- not ideal but there is no place else for the kit. See pic. I can use Shure SM81s (cardioid) or Earthworks TC25s (omnis). I will try both and listen of course, but I have heard that o...

Re: Best vocal mic under 2K?
After a lot of research, I ordered a Pearlman TM1 and an SM7B. Blew the budget a little bit, but I am really looking forward to trying these out. Thanks all for your recommendations, I learned a lot.

Re: Best vocal mic under 2K?
I use it with a Cloudlifter usually, but not always. If you're going to spend $1000 on a mic, you really can't go wrong with less than $500 on an SM7B and a Cloudlifter. You will never regret it. Roger I actually ordered an SM7B and it just arrived. Do I need a Cloudlifter? I do have some pretty ni...

Subwoofer placement - is there a "right way"?
I recently started mixing with a sub. Is it important to have the subwoofer centered in your listening field, like underneath the desk in the middle -- or can it be "off to one side" as space allows without messing up panning decisions, etc?

How important is it to mic the bottom of a snare?
Usually I just stick a 57 on the top head. Educate me as to why and how a dual-dynamic micing approach might be better.

Does anyone mic the hat and if so why?
Obviously people do. And I'm not very experienced at recording drums, so I'll say that up front. But I have always gotten enough hat via the overheads, and found it hard to keep the snare from bleeding into the hat mic, so I stopped mic-ing the hat. Any similar/different experiences or advice? I am ...

Best pitch correction software?
I have never enjoyed using pitch correction and haven't had it for nearly a decade. I used to use Melodyne which seemed to work well. Now I find myself in a position where clients expect to have the option. What's the best plugin to use these days for light pitch correction tasks? I'm running a UA A...

Best vocal mic under 2K?
I have some decent budget mics, Rode NT1, etc. but I am looking to upgrade to a nicer condenser. If you could only have one, and your budget could not exceed 2K, "who would win"? Will be used on both male and female vocals and different styles of music.
