Re: Names NOT to Use for Your STUDIO
There is/was a studio around here called "Rockhaus",needless to say they were German and into progressive rock as the name implies.

Re: Mic Locker Next addition?
Second on the Senn e609. Very useful little mic especially on guitar cabinets. The Josephson C42MP are a good bang for the buck set of mics, you'd have to spend a lot more to get better, the next step up being the Microtech Gefell M300 pair. An AEA R84 would be great to have around, wonderful for an...

Re: Does this ever happen?
This stuff does happen. Larger studios often times rent out those choice pieces for extra dough. So in some cases they may not even explain their policy or rationale because they figure you didn't have the extra budget to spare. Or they have extra gear and it doesn't cost more to use, but they don't...

Re: what's the best patchbay for the money?
Neutrik NYSPP (48 Point TRS Patch Bay) is pretty decent for the money, they are under $100 each new. I have 3 of these in my commercial tracking studio, they get a lot of use. Haven't had any problems. I have a friend in Orlando who has had these as well, for several years with no problems. My conso...

Re: bad idea? baking old 456 for a session
I suppose getting the client buys some new reels is not possible? If you do a lot of analog recording maybe you could find some decent used reels to get as "house reels". Do you have another format recorder to use as a backup, i.e. harddisk, computer? Just in case baking the reels doesn't work. I've...

Re: Favorite mics for recording tom-tom's?
I use TLM103's, although I'd use Soundelux U195's if someone invented some type of system to protect the mics from getting bashed.

Re: Client trashes equipment
http://www.atlasproaudio.com/dentedtlm.jpg I have 4 TLM103s I use for toms, this one looks the worst. I had a project in last summer, where the drummer bashed this mic (in the photo). I didn't mention it to him or the band. I'm sure the drummer noticed hitting it though... What kills me is that the...

Re: How much is enough ($)?
My studio manager told me a formula for figuring out an hourly rate if you all are interested. You take the total amount of gear (all the gear) and 1 year's overhead invested (building's rent, electricity, etc.), a rounded estimate. Take that divided by 2000. She said a studio should make back their...

Re: Sound Workshop Mixers?
I can't really comment on that particular board. I own a Sound Workshop Series 30 and a Sound Workshop 1280. I had my Series 30 modded and worked on for about 2 weeks straight by the original production manager, who at the time when I got the board was living about 45 minutes from here. I'm happy wi...

At what point does it become...Tape Gouging ?
I bought 18 reels of 2" right after the news of the Quantegy Alabama plant closing. The most I paid for any one reel was $169. Most were less, I bought from about 4 different places. I also bought about 17 reels of BASF 911 1/4", all for about what I normally ever paid $28-30 per reel. The guy from ...

Re: is 499 the same as GP9?
It's not the same. I believe GP9 is the old Scotch 996 formula. I personally prefer 499 much more, but GP9 doesn't suck if everything else in the chain is good.

Re: Are the reissue 1176s different than the originals?
I've got a pair of revision H silver faces...I think they smoke the pair of blackface reissues I owned. They still have a fair amount of character from the output transformers, but they don't roll off the low end like the UA models did.

Re: Does gear like Distressor or Fatso=Analog tape?
Is there anything out there currently that is a dead ringer for the coveted sound that involves all those wonderful everpresent adjectives that cover this board?? No, there isn't. Not that I have heard. I have not come across a piece of outboard gear or plug-in that can come close to, simulate, mim...

Re: Studio FAQ's
Hey Larry, I'll just add a couple things I find helpful for me, and you can see if it would help. Does the $250 studio rental day rate include an engineer? No, the engineer?s fee is on top of the studio rental. How much do engineers charge per hour on top of the studio rental rate? That varies. Most...

Re: Spec Deals... is there a standard?
In a lot of ways there is no standard, yet there are some expectations that each party usually have. For instance, as the studio or producer of a spec project, you expect recoupment for your losses plus "interest" for basically funding their project. Just to get back your pay after they sell 60,000 ...
