Another +1 for Scott. He really took some extra time to make it exactly how I wanted it. I too have had bad mastering experiences & Scott does a great job at a price your clients will like.

Stuff I did with my old band - although posted under my own name because the band is no more. My 4 song E.P. Got the Liver Transplant Coolers on the Subway is mastered and everything.

>>>>I like the rattling snare idea. You could move a snare drum within earshot of the mic.<<<< You mean that sound everyone's always trying to get out of their drum tracks? GJ Precisely! I was listening to a drum track for a song I was working on, wondering why the bass drum sounded so freakin' awe...

+ 1 on standing in a room with the amp. I like the rattling snare idea. You could move a snare drum within earshot of the mic.

Not an experienced recordist, but I know how to get an extra loud guitar sound. 1) Loud guitar sound #1. Take a small amp (i.e. Fender Champ, Vox AC-15, Silvertone, whatever) with one speaker. It need not be 12", 8" is probably ideal. Put an SM 57 on it, preferably pretty close. Crank it. If it star...

I think what you're finding is that "versatile" and "guitar amps" don't really go that well together, especially if you've got a nice old Telecaster. That said, you may find that a Fender Vibro-Champ with a good speaker and some pedals (at least a Tube Screamer and a Big Muff) can cover a lot of gro...

If y'all haven't heard the Dylan mono analog reissues on LP of 'Blonde on Blonde' and 'Freewheelin', you're missing out. Talk about a ghost coming into your living room. It defines transparent. Those are what I call 'control room reference playbacks'. Or, blow you head off to the first Traffic reco...

I love a slight keyhole like that when I'm a buyer. Makes em cheaper.

I'd detune the bottom head somewhat from where you think it should be especially the lugs nearest the snares. Make sure you're not getting a strong fundamental from the bottom head, but it's not flabby either and you're not hearing a lot of weird overtones. Crank up the top head and add moongel to t...

Excellent question. Mine sound different. They have different E.Q.s. Different hearing damage from my 20s(which side was the Twin Reverb on and which side had the ultra-loud drummer? Can't remember....)? Maybe. When I'm mixing on headphones I have to turn them around backwards from time to time.

Thanks for the input guys. The guitar and singing are me. I get complaints about too-bright guitars all the time. My first love was screeching 60s treble. But if it's reaching speaker-destroying levels I can put a lid on it. As long as it doesn't sound like an inebriated Captain Beefheart jamming wi...

As a musician/songwriter who's been in other people's studios a lot (and is always trying to save money), I usually have a guitar arrangement mostly worked out when I come in to the studio. If someone tells me not to finish recording the extra tracks, I can agree with them at the time, but end up fe...

Thanks Nick. Here are the initial revisions. I don't know whether I like them better than the original (other than the louder vocals). I'll try bumping them up on the original too. The main differences are the drum sounds and the ending, but it's not really all that different. The revisions sound fu...

The thing is, the band is just a trio, so I could take any number of things out. I was astonished when I noticed how many guitar tracks I'd recorded. I think the breakdown works OK, but the verses are a little dense and I'm not getting enough impact from the guitar hook. I'm gonna try a garage re-mi...
