Forgot to say that I haven't necessarily noticed it changing with tape speed, but I also haven't paid close attention to that. My machine only has 15 and 30 IPS.

Mo-Tech, Yep, sounds like we have the same problems. I have also de-magged without any difference. Chris Mara seems to think it could be related to the tape not making perfect contact to the heads. Your experiment with the impedance roller may speak to that since you did notice a change in the pops ...

Having similar problems with my MCI JH16. Eventhough it was refurbed by Chris Mara it has this pop and rocks issue with the MRL tape (also bought new) and when recording a tone myself. My heads are like new too, btw... I wish I could help, but thus far I'm still in your camp- confused and uncertain....

Put your manuals in there. $100 Located in San Diego, CA. It will be expensive to ship, but I can if ...

My studio is in the back of some property that I own. It's really hard to imagine doing it any other way for me. For one, you know you can build/modify the structure(s) any way you want. And then you also have built-in rent control. I've observed that one of the most common reasons for studios havin...

Actually, looking more closely at my old e-mails it ended up being over $500 in my case, but there was some weird things going on with it that may not apply in your case.

Yes, it was something like $350.00 - $450.00.

They also sold me a new pinch roller for $50.

Gilroy is right. It's called the EXTC. Great little box. Send level, return level, and wet/dry mix knob. Transformer coupled to reduce ground loops.

Try MDI Precision Motor Works:

They rebuilt an Otari capstan motor for me a long time ago.

FYI, Wes put up some pics of my studio on his website:

http://www.weslachot.com/project29.html

The Control Room came out great. It sounds amazing and objectively measures quite well (+/-7dB in the low frequencies). Wes says the best rooms measure +/-5dB.

Enjoy!

This isn't your exact situation, but I've been building a studio from the ground up in California over the last year. The structural engineering costs were about $3000. My studio is about 800sqft.

Thanks for the replies. I am inputting +4dBu on each channel and have the master fader at 0. The tone bleed is noticeable with the main speaker volume knob at levels less than max too. So I don't think I'm necessarily pushing things into their un-linear extremes. Jim, I sent you an e-mail at the add...
