Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

It was such a great experience. We had recorded an album locally but we were still super green. Paul kicked our ass a bit in the beginning, which we needed. But by the end I was running the board when Paul was recording some parts and he mixed it in the A room on their big API. Paul letting us (me) ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Over the past pandemic year or so I’ve changed up pretty much my whole drum set up. I finally found a set of C&C drums in black tie butcher block, I bought a set of Istanbul cymbals and I finally pulled the trigger on a World Max Black Beauty type snare. I bought a 6.5.x 14 and they were had just so...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

that reminds me of a session where a guitar player brought in some kind of vintage echo/reverb unit (can't remember exactly what). at the end of a song we noticed it was picking up a local (Spanish language) radio station, coming through the guitar amp. so yeah, we kept that! Same exact thing. We h...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

Secondly, the telephone voice thing is very early 2000, but I actually did that on this record because I thought it was funny. The last time this band played together was when that was popular so I thought it was actually fitting to be a bit dated. We recorded the telephone voice in 1996 - using an...

Re: Hearing Imbalance

I'm actually going through a pretty traumatic hearing loss in my right ear right now due to a sudden virus. It was down 30 db and distorted almost overnight. It's back up about 10 dis now, but it's a long term recovery that's a 50/50 chance of being permanent. I won't know for months until the virus...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

So many things in this thread. One of my old bands that was together in the early 2000's randomly got back together over the winter and recorded an entire album remotely. Most of the guys were new to recording at home and EVERY TRACK CAME TO ME IN STEREO, but they were all mono of course. So that wa...

Re: replicating "bleed" in a multitrack recording

It's funny, maybe I've been doing this wrong/right all along but my "room" verb aux has always been used for this. I would pick a room appropriate for the band, small to medium tight for an indie rock band say, and then place every instrument into that room a bit, even the bass. Then tuck that under...

Re: pan your drums out of the center

Several years ago I went through an LCR phase. Lately I’ve been compacting the drums so they resemble their actual physical space on stage more and getting away from hyper wide stereo stuff. Depends on the song, but definitely less panning of drums than I used to do. I’m an atheist, so I go back and...

I have a super clean mint Symetrix 501, push button type compressor. I can email pics to anyone interested, just PM me your email. The Alice was the precursor/inspiration for the TapeOp omnis, right? I made a couple of those when they were the craze around here... ended up putting them in a manikin head, with a wax-filled coconut shell for a skull and rubber elf ears, to make a binaural head. Works pretty well. Anyone still ro...
