Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?
The Burl B1D is ridiculous. I’d have a pair for sure if I could afford them. I sold the B1 to cover my monitors and because I really like to have pairs. Based on this thread I’m thinking of building a Copper and then a Lola and going from there. Anyone here used the TG2 mic pre? I’ve wanted one ever...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?
The Copper is really great, and not just for the price. I've used em along side a desk full of vintage 1073/1066's and I bet in a blind test you wouldn't be able to pick one or the other out. All of the HB stuff is top notch. Lola rules too, especially with the 512 DOA's that the Copper also uses i...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?
Now that it’s sold I can talk about it without seeming like I was trying to hype it, but the Burl preamps are gorgeous. I had a B1 and a B1D. I have interface pres that are clean so I let the B1 go but the B1D is just so good sounding on everything. Just a tad darker and thicker sounding than the B1...

Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques
I’m with Drumsound, ORTF all the way. Since I first tried it I just can’t be happy with anything else; and it just sounds so right. I’m using Oktava Mc-12s that I modded back in the day. I recently bought one of the Dachman 87 clones and I’m gonna try that mono with the Oktavas. It has a really nice...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I’ve been on a monitor redo the last six months or so. I bought the new Auratones a few months ago and they are awesome. I’m still getting used to using them but for as crappy as they sound, they are so pure. You kind of forget how nice a single driver in a sealed enclosure can sound. The lack of a ...

Re: RIP Chris Garges @cgarges
I bought some monitors from Mitch Easter recently and that rabbit hole brought me back to the TOMB for the first time in several years. An article about Mitch mentioned the news about Chris. I mainly knew him through the forum but one day on a whim, I bid on a Topaz board on eBay and won it. Realizi...

Burl B1 Pre / DI - Mint
Hey Tomb, long time no see. Selling a few things to cover some new monitors I just bought. Burl B1 Mic Pre and DI - this thing sounds amazing on everything I’ve used it on. Run the gain up and output down and it’s thick and punchy like a boxer or run the gain low and it’s clean and shiny like a Sund...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts
It was such a great experience. We had recorded an album locally but we were still super green. Paul kicked our ass a bit in the beginning, which we needed. But by the end I was running the board when Paul was recording some parts and he mixed it in the A room on their big API. Paul letting us (me) ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Over the past pandemic year or so I’ve changed up pretty much my whole drum set up. I finally found a set of C&C drums in black tie butcher block, I bought a set of Istanbul cymbals and I finally pulled the trigger on a World Max Black Beauty type snare. I bought a 6.5.x 14 and they were had just so...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts
that reminds me of a session where a guitar player brought in some kind of vintage echo/reverb unit (can't remember exactly what). at the end of a song we noticed it was picking up a local (Spanish language) radio station, coming through the guitar amp. so yeah, we kept that! Same exact thing. We h...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts
Secondly, the telephone voice thing is very early 2000, but I actually did that on this record because I thought it was funny. The last time this band played together was when that was popular so I thought it was actually fitting to be a bit dated. We recorded the telephone voice in 1996 - using an...
