I've been doing a live music TV show every month for the past three years, recording 16 tracks at 44kHz / 24-bit on the internal drive of my Macbook. It's always worked like a charm. This is a four-year old laptop. If I try mixing on it with a lot of effects, it starts groaning. But it records fine....

I've used my 16-4-2 on a three-year-old iMac and a three-year-old Macbook pro. The software that comes with it is simple - it's just a copy of the mixer itself. The mixer takes a few days to get used to, but once you do, it's a godsend. I don't think the computer is going to be stressed by the mixer...

I use a Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 Firewire mixer. $2000 for sixteen channels, four busses, and each channel has a very good EQ, compressor, and limiter, as does the master buss, all four busses, and all 6 aux sends. This is a serious live / recording tool. It also has two FX units, one for reverbs ...

Although it's really entertaining to watch you guys dump on each other, I'd like to address the original post: If you're going to switch platforms to save a little money, you're in for an awfully big headache. I wouldn't think the price-to-aggravation ratio would be worth it. I got a 1.8 GHz G5 iMac...

If you're not a believer yet, pick up the Talking Heads "brick" box set and put on "Remain In Light". That album was MADE for surround-sound. Or pick up either of two titles on Harmonia Mundi: Brahm's German Requiem or Faure's Requiem. Surround sound is the best thing that's happened to my ears sinc...

1. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (the mono mix)
2. The Beatles White Album (stereo mix)
There are many other albums that I love, but I have to admit these will probably be my top two for the rest of my life.

Re: How much recording have you done?
I was 20 in 1978 when I recorded my first album. I've done 53 more since then on my label. About 35 of them were my albums, and the rest were ones that I engineered or at least mastered for friends. I've been doing the home studio thing the whole time.

I honestly don't think that most magazines publish great reviews of products simply because they come from one of their advertisers. Call me naive, but I'm pretty sure most editors look at that as a third rail - touch it and die. Are most trade magazines enamored of most of their advertisers' produc...

I would imagine stuff like this will only get worse. Didja see the Budget that Bush The Impaler released? He's cutting education. I can see why - he never got much out of it....
Hey, wait a minute - wasn't he supposed to be boosting education? Could he possibly have LIED again?

Re: CDR audio format compatibility question
Get Adaptec's Jam. If you've already got Toast, you might as well get Jam. I'm pretty sure that that's the only way to make redbook compliant CD-Rs from Adaptec, and it lets you write disc-at-once, which can include crossfades with no tiny bits of silence between the tracks when you don't want them ...

Although andyg666 listed the reasons I was disappointed by Kerry, the Democrats already know that no liberals will ever vote for a conservative Republican, so they go after the middle. I wish they, or at least SOMEONE on the national stage, would point out to Americans that these Republicans' action...

Re: Covers on album question
I'll try to get in touch with Dylan. I wouldn't mind sending him $100 (which is a lot for me as a teacher) for the pleasure of playing his songs. However, I think the fee of $1000 was a bit excessive. Nary a penny was made on this venture, so it's not like I'm getting rich on another man's labors. A...

Jeez - what's the best way to say "I wasn't paying attention and I feel like a stupid idiot?"Ummm... I'm the tutoring guy with the girl and her two kids, I'm not the guy who started the thread.

Re: Covers on album question
Sorry, Joel - do you mean that I should feel like a criminal for having recorded Dylan's songs? I honestly cannot afford $1000 on my income, and I gave most of the CDs away.
