I'll agree with the Metric Halo interfaces. We just purchased a 2882+DSP and we're really loving it (for lots of reasons). The Pres and converters sound etremely nice, and the hardware and software don't get in the way at all if you just what to use it as a router. I've used several Apogee converter...

I try to suggest not playing a mastered ref in the control room where it was mixed. Unfortunately, many engineers only feel comfortable listening to music in their control rooms. I've not surprised to be in the home of a producer/engineer, and find out they don't have a "working" stereo. The main al...

I'd like to make a quick comment on the regular rant of the "volume wars", based on my daily experiences. Complaining and trashing an artists work due to it's lack of dynamic range doesn't work (it hasn't stopped the war yet, and there's a whole other louder discussion on how it might actually promo...

Products like this can be viewed as an advancement in technology, or an insult to a profession. I'm downloading it now (trying to be open-minded), and will give it a try.

Re: Masterlink DSP
The Masterlink's DSP can be quite good if used carefully, and with subtlety (don't automatically crank it up, take your time and listen to what's happening). Many people just need a few dB to get their reference CD's comparable to commercial releases for A/B'ing mixes (lots of great mixes don't get ...

Re: Stereo Expansion
Like dsw says, I feel most stereo widening processors tend to thin things out (mostly by adjusting the phase relationship of the center and side channels - like M-S). I would always suggest checking whatever tracks you're processing in mono (or the entire mix?). In Mastering, I try to only use it wh...

Re: Need your advice: master CD level
If you feel your Mix sounds great, then putting a limiter on it to increase the loudness of the disc is a simple thing to try, but will change the dynamics that you love. Try a couple dB at first and live with it, don't get carried away. Definitely do it from your DAW and not the Masterlink. This is...

Re: Master Pop
Without knowing additional information about this "other" engineer and your confidence in him, I would definitely say wait for a new master. Can you wait a couple of weeks? Is it worth the risk considering the amount of time have you put into your project? It's always best if you can re-burn a new m...

Re: Logic Users: what are you putting on the master output b
Adding plug-ins to the master fader while mixing ITB, can be a great and easy way to give the mix a little glue or that final touch. However, I'd strongly suggest also storing a copy of the mix without any processing. If you later decide to have it Mastered or processed by anyone else, it can be sig...

Re: Anybody heard "Leviathan" by Mastodon?
Sad to say during the wake of the Quantegy factory closing that this record was tracked to and mixed from two inch (with some additional Protools tracks running along with the two inch during mix) Mixed to half inch. Great band. Great record.

Re: Mastering Geniuses HO!
Hi Brian. A couple of additional points to ponder... 1. Many sample rate conversions require more bits. If your mix is at a higher resolution and the mastering process requires (or needs) a SRC, you probably will need more bits, or else clipping will occur. 2. If the mastering process is being done ...

Re: Otari MX5050 2 track differences?
I have an original MX5050 that I've had for about 17 years. It goes out on loan and always comes back working (some records just have to be mixed analog). IMO, these are very solid, affordable machines - better than the Tascam's in this price range. Sonically, especially on the earlier models, the p...

Re: Mixdown to Masterlink @ 24/96K to send to Mastering?
First, check with the mastering studio you plan on using. SRC can make a huge difference in the sound/quality of a mix. I would suggest if you have the time (automation/recall/drive space), mix down through the rosetta to the Masterlink at 24/96k and 24/44.1k. This way you'll have it covered. If at ...

Re: If you only had $500-$1000 to spend on your only monitor
Don't forget that studio monitors are a tool used for many reasons, not just to sound great. High resolution playback is helpful, but not at the sacrifice of having a set of monitors that don't translate to the real world. The original Yamaha NS10's sounded like crap, but they made you get the criti...
