you might be able to do that as part of the mastering process. if you send it to tape after compressing you might be able to ride the whole mix hotter to the cassette and get more tape compression, avoid clipping, and and get a better signal to noise ratio. if you master/compress after the 4-track y...

I should preface with: I haven't listened to anything, just throwing out one crazy idea. Try panning the bass and guitar really hard. Have a DI for both to blend with the mics. You should have all the bass you need from the DI's. Just roll off all the DI high and mid, or scoop. Make sure the mics an...

bass guitar compression settings?

Hello! What attack and release times might be a good place to start for the compression on a bass played with really fast down strokes in a three piece post-punk-ish rock mix? I haven't decided if this is a problem or not, but i'm getting low notes played really fast blending into one long note. It ...

Re: learning to play guitar better... with $0

Beginning students often ask, "How long will it take me to learn the Way of Zen Guitar?" My answer is, as long as you live--that short. Your playing may progress enough to impress your friends in a year's time, perform onstage in two years, or turn professional in three. But if those are the ends yo...

I'm in the band too. Thanks for all the awesome comments! You guys are too nice. The LDC mic was a superlux... cm-h8a I think. The reverb plugin was free from SIR. It's convolution. Probably all of the impulses we used were from noisevault (also free). The 30 by 30 room seemed to fit our sound prett...

Re: Power amp questions

If the eq comes after the preamp I think it will usefull. I like to have one eq stage before the preamp and/or distorter and then another after. This way you can choose which frequencies you want to hear harmonics of and then what you want your overall sound to be like. I like to just send almost ev...

Re: dub bass?

Acording to my yorkville bass amp (amp has multiband eq) manual. For reggae you make a straight line with the eq levers slanting down from low frequencies to high frequencies. I believe it specifically goes 40 - 80 - 120 - 180 - 340 - 660 - 1.3k - 2.5k - 5k - 10k. +8dB to -8dB http://www.yorkville.c...

WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!??! djgout, yeah i didn't really get the cutting the snare from the overheads part. we ended up using very little of that article... especially the gating, but we are just starting out and it got us moving forward. i guess i should have included the bit about "a grain of salt."

how much current usually goes through head phones? as far as cell phones... when i got one i read the safety warning and it says right there that the phone should be is a holder a least half an inch away from you body at all times when turned on. i don't think it's worth it to most people to look th...

Re: mixing high end

we ran through this procedure http://www.recordingproject.com/articles/article.php?article=5 with our muddy small room home recording mix and it helped clear things up quite a bit... a lot of it is covered above already. we also recorded the bass with an sm57... which i thought was crazy at first, b...

Re: how do i fix this bad guitar tone?

Aren't Dimebag Darrell's (Pantera) Randall heads Solid State? You can get a metal sound without tubes. Probably just a somewhat less natural colder raw sound. Maybe try the Boss Metal Zone pedal. http://guitargeek.com/gearview/67/ It's relatively inexpensive. The guitar might be pretty easy to fix, ...

Re: Micing a kick drum with a speaker?

i used a guitar combo with a 12" speaker. there was a 1/4" input on the back that was already wired to the speaker. i just unpluged the amp from it, pluged in a mono 1/4-to-XLR cable and ran it to the preamp. i just set the amp in front of the kick. it required very little work. with the speaker bei...
