The advice, 'the closer you get to the source the more impact it will have on your sound' is very solid. I've found it true for the most part, getting a Great River pre had more impact on my sound than getting Apogee converters, getting a Rode NT2 had more impact on my sound than getting the Great R...

yeah as Prof said a collection of mics helps immensely, in my case even when singing different parts I like to track backup vox with a different mic than the lead. Ones I've liked are ADK TC/TL, TLM 103, Blue Bottle even a 57 if the vox needs to be a bit thin. Good luck.

I second the ADK suggestion. I just got a TC (cardioid only version) and it's been a significant upgrade from my NTK. The Rode was too sibilant and peaky in the high end, while the ADK is much smoother for my vocal needs. So as not to be called a Rode hater I have an NT2 that I still use often on AG...

or take your shoe and sock off and use a toe to touch the metal and ground that way. Unless you need that foot to keep time with, then you could use another extremity, please don't post any pictures. Thanks.

yeah, try micing by the rear strap pin at the bottom of the body with no part of the mic 'looking' at the strings, I do that sometimes just to get less attack in one of my acoustic mics.

yeah, mic distance is great assuming your room isn't totally dead, it creates a lot of space without the need to add verb or delay.

Yeah one is omni/cardioid the other is pad OR low cut with the middle position being nothing/bypassed, be careful however as I only used mine in cardioid but it always would be in omni mode when I pulled it from it's pouch. Mic gremlin's I suspect.

DMX Cable

I was rummaging through an odds and ends cable box and thought I had found a 3 foot mic cable, but getting home and reading the package it was actually a 3 pin DMX cable. Can I use this for audio or is it purely for lighting, what's the difference anyhow? Thanks.

I feel your pain. I did a couple albums with a Rode NT, Bellari/Mackie Pres and a 3630 for Com, monitored on Alesis M1's. Since then I've upgraded to a Sytek, ADK TC and Distressor with the impact being in that order. For me the main thing was getting the vocal sounds right, if you've got a mic that...

Thanks for the feedback, I was looking to spend around $600, thus the hesitation on the Nord, but I've also spent hundreds of dollars on Rode/Bellari gear that I would've been better off saving for a Soundelux/Sytek. Pay a little now or pay a lot later. Any other recs to check out are greatly apprec...

Keyboard/Synth Sounds

I'm looking for above average B3, Rhodes and Acoustic Piano sounds from a keyboard as well as various other string/orchestral sounds, I read a bunch of the posts recommending the Nord, Ion, Triton etc. etc. but I wasn't clear if the Ion/Micron/Triton LE had those sounds or if they were just great sy...

Doctari - I'm thinking of making the same plunge as you, adding a Portico to my Sytek pre. Can you let me know what the major differences your hearing between the two, especially in regards to vox and guitar? Thanks.
