Re: Taking a specific vocal sound to live settings

The one issue I could see would be what your setup does to the monitor feed at stage volume. It might be fine but it could also be howling feedback. If it was me I'd try to have a wet and dry send to the front of house. If the fx cause issues in the monitor then they have the option to use the clean...

Re: tricks to make stereo pads more interesting in the mix?

Are they drones or are they moving with the chords? I'm mixing an ambient record at the moment with lots of synth drones. To spice things up I've been making tape loops based on the drones. I cut a super long loop, put a big wad of masking tape over the erase head on my tape deck and run the drone i...

Re: Pro Tools/Hard Drive playback issue

It appears to be the drive after all. I trashed the pro tools prefs and deleted the digidesign database on the drive. Still get the same problem. Even weirder is that when I record new tracks (with no audio input, just dead air) and then play it back I get a heavily distorted garbled playback of aud...

Re: Pro Tools/Hard Drive playback issue

The thing that makes me feel like it's a pro tools issue more than a hard drive issue is that anything recorded before the issue arose plays back just fine. Anything recorded after the issue arose plays as static. It's unlikely that it's the FW port on the computer because I've had the same issue wi...

Re: Pro Tools/Hard Drive playback issue

I tried importing the data into a new session with no luck. Did the same thing on a different computer with no luck. The problem resolved when I transferred to a new drive.

You may be onto something with the FireWire suggestion. I’ll have to try a different port/cable today.

Pro Tools/Hard Drive playback issue

Here’s a weird one I haven’t sorted out yet. I was on a session yesterday and everything was going well. We’d tracked a few beds and everything was sounding good. We decided to try a few more takes and suddenly the new takes wouldn’t play back as audio. They turn into blasts of static. I can see the...

Re: Your favorite general use eq plugin

They're pretty old at this point but so am I - Waves API eqs. All three depending what I need. Waves Pultec. Pro tools standard EQs - 1 band and 7 band. There are way more advanced options but i know these so well that it's quick and easy to dial stuff in. Plus I've made a ton of my own presets to g...

Re: Looking for mixer to pair with Fostex R8

I had a Soundcraft Spirit Studio on loan for a while and it was quite good. Lots of routing options - auxes, bus & direct outs. PreAmps and EQs were pretty good and it’s was pretty solid and reliable.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I picked up a slightly used parlor guitar a few days ago, from "Simon and Patrick". Canadian maker, somehow affiliated with Godin, Seagull, and the like. Nice price for a solid wood guitar, now to brush up on my cowboy chord work. https://i.imgur.com/W5DABVI.jpg I have the Art & Lutherie version of...

Re: Mixing an 8 piece band with an edge

Yeah the reverb on his records is totally key to me. I "get" room sound, and I understand various effects styles being applied to tracks (pre-delay, plate vs spring vs digital etc), but I can't crack the way they put space into these recordings (or capture it). It's very cool sounding. . A key elem...

Re: Mixing an 8 piece band with an edge

To me Fela’s records share a lot of the sound and production/engineering approach of James Brown records from the late 60’s/early 70’s (and a lot of American r&b of that era). They sound like they were made well but fast and most of the tones and sound is happening in the room live. They sound like ...

Re: M. Ward's Drum Sound on "Never Had Nobody Like You"

I’m listening on an iPad so take some of this with a grain in of salt. Snare sounds like it’s all bottom mic with the top head muffled. Maybe a cloth over it or something like that. Kick sounds like there is no front head and a mic with lots of mids and highs right up on the beater. Sounds like it’s...

Re: 8 Channel Hum Eliminator before Tape

Not to derail things but this sounds like a symptom of a bigger issue. Do you only have hum on the tape machine? Have you confirmed that your feed lines to the machine are wired properly (sounds like it but I'd double and triple check). How's the power in the studio? Have you checked that it's actua...

Re: transparent 500 series pre

My old studio partner had the millennia and true precision 8s in our shared space. Both were great and had no “sound”. They sounded like the source and the mic. The millennia was more prone to problems though. Switches and knobs would develop crackles and dead/noisy spots. The trues were rock solid ...
