Re: Would Dumping from an 8 track repeatedly cause sync issues?

Synching multiple passes from a tape machine will make you crazy. It's not worth it. You can however record through the Otari 8 track into the computer. I've done it with two track machines and there's no reason it wouldn't work with an 8 track. Basically you split your pre-amp sends so that one ver...

Re: U195 and too many midrange mics

I probably have between 5 and 9 different dynamic mics up (all under $400) any time I track a whole band depending on how many guitar amps they're using and whether I was using a ribbon or condenser on said guitar amps. I seem to rock more dynamics than anything else on a full band session. As soon...

Re: tracking headphones 2019 (for the performers)

AKG K52s over here. Admittedly I bought them because they were one of the cheaper, robust options. I'm always reluctant to spend a bunch on tracking headphone because they get trashed so quickly. The K52s are pretty decent for the price. They're a little too dull sounding for critical applications b...

Re: An Analog Setup for My Needs (Tape Machine Talk)

I can’t comment on the ms16 beyond the already stated fact that 1” is more expensive and that it doesn’t have a great reputation for sound. I have an msr16 which is a great machine for what it is. It’s not 2” by any stretch but it can sound really good and you can easily make a good sounding record ...

Re: Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

Power trio type arrangements are tricky unless you start breaking some tried and true mix conventions. The easiest thing to do is a mono or wide mono mix. Instruments panned centre but maybe with stereo room and drums. The other approach is to start thinking about panning drums and Bass away from th...

Re: Tracks imported from Mackie DL32R are hissing. They weren't before.

What happens when you run other things out of the computer through those same channels? What happens if you route one of the clean tracks through one of the hissy channels? Is the previously clean track now hissy? If yes then the problem is on that channel of the interface or mixer. If not then the ...

Or it may have been happening on those channel of the bar's mix. What's on the hissy channels?

Re: Otari MX5050 mkiii tape lifters and guides

For the sake of simplicity I'd try new tape before doing anything else. If it's still shedding you might consider getting into surgery on the machine. I had a 5050 but it's been years. Id be surprised if you couldn't rotate the guides. The service manual and an exploded diagram are on line if you hu...

Re: What musical thang didja work on today/night?

Did live sound and a live recording at Trinity Church here in Toronto. The church was the site of the Trinity Sessions record by The Cowboy Junkies. Truely an amazing space. We had two hours between load in and doors. Discovered as soon as I unpacked the snake and board (rented by the artist) that t...

Auto correct to the rescue. Should have read KIDS record.
A kiss record would be more fun though. I'll have to have a talk with him.

Re: What musical thang didja work on today/night?

Started a kids record with a super long term client. He's a dylanesque singer songwriter. We make a record every three to four years.
When we started he couldnt play along with anyone else and his timing was crazy. Years later he's playing guide tracks to drum loops like a champ.

Re: What musical thang didja work on today/night?

Bringing this thread back. I'm currently exporting final mixes for the never ending record that I was grumbling about when this thread started. I see a light at the end of the tunnel!
What are all of you working on tonight?

Re: moving from huge live room to small one

I moved from a big space to a converted garage. My new space is slightly larger than my old control room and it’s an all in one live/control room. I can also run a snake into the house if I need more space. I can do a lot here but there are times when it makes the most sense to rent another room for...

Get the best guys you can.
This. Even if you use a multi mic setup cut the section together and pay close attention to tuning.

Re: Show Us Your Junk - cool gear porn YouTube Channel

Don't get too into those vids. They're just Earthquaker promo commercials. The participants probably had some incentives to do them. Yes and no. There are lots of shots of earthquaker gear and it’s clear that they’re the ones behind the videos but there are no outright plugs and they are not the fo...
