Re: rearranging one room studio at mix time?

i have to have my monitors and console up against the wall to maximize the space but i know this is not ideal for monitors to be right against a wall. Actually, the best place for loudspeakers is inset flush into the wall, so putting them as close to the wall as possible can be second best in some ...

Is there a spec that manufacturers publish for "reliability"-- on a scale of ten or somesuch? It's called Mean Time Between Failure, or MTBF. I don't recall ever seeing that for sound cards or outboard converters, but it's a common and important spec for electronic components and systems such as ha...

I don't really see how paint would help, but then again the green glue really worked, so who knows?... Green Glue works on a solid acoustic principle, versus "acoustic" paint and lead and heavy vinyl sheets. Well, those have a principle too, but they're not massive enough to do much. The cheapest a...

Where should I put the rest (6 panels)? A rectangle room has 12 corners, not just four: * 4 where walls meet other walls * 4 more where walls meet the ceiling * 4 more where walls meet the floor All of these locations are candidates for bass traps. Then once all 12 of those corners are treated, the...

Those panels are just about the minimum thickness you can use for bass traps. If cost is not a problem, I'd double them up to be twice as thick. Otherwise, they'll still help a lot. They're definitely thick enough as is for reflection points.

Re: foam is fine!

I found this place, where you can get wedge foam, pyramid foam, eggcrate foam, and corner bass traps, etc for much less than Auralex: That company is a fraud. They claim the same performance as Auralex, but it's a lie. Proof in the test data below showing lab results for Auralex LENRDs and the chea...

There are many electric upright basses available that have no resonating body, but play and sound (mostly) like a real acoustic upright. I'd think that's the only real solution. Here's one, though there are many others out there:

That's my choice too because that room is large enough to do both.

Re: treating these rooms with what I have?

Thanks for moving this to the public forum. I've got 28 4" thick, 2'x4' 703 panels ... I'm trying to figure out how to best deploy my 28 panels. That's an awful lot of surface area to treat with "only" 28 panels. I'd put half of them in the control room because that needs to be more dead and more fl...

Polys are pretty simple. Google QRDude to find a freeware program that helps you design real QRD diffusors.

Is there any optimum amounts of wall space to cover for adequate diffusion? Or is it completely to taste. Well, it's partly taste, but the science aspect is easy to define. You need to avoid comb filtering and "early" reflections that muddy the sound picked up by the microphones making everything u...

Re: Poly Diffusion

I'm not a fan of polys unless the room is very large. Unlike QRD type diffusors, polys don't reduce comb filtering, so microphones and instruments need to be pretty far away to avoid a hollow boxy sound. But they are easier to make. This video may help you decide:

Ethan Winer in this article http://www.ethanwiner.com/basstrap.html says that wall traps are moree appropiate for bigger rooms like mine. Room corner traps would be betterfor smaller rooms. So, do you think I should give to Ethans panels a go? These days I recommend fiberglass-based traps even for ...

Re: Portable acoustic treatment?

I'd like 6-8 panels to take with me on location for when i record ... I'm just looking for some isolation between instruments For isolation you'll do better with self-standing panels with hinges (or on wheels). You could make something like the hinged MiniGobos shown below. --Ethan http://www.realt...
