Re: Scholz Power Soak

Yeah, I use one on my Mesa Mark IIB. They say it's bad for the toobz because you are working them harder, etc. I say it works great! I run the Boogie at 65 watts oin the -12dB setting and am very happy with the sounds. You are not, of course, pushing as much air, etc. but I believe tat the amp sound...

Re: The Stones...Exile On Sticky Fingers....whaddaya know?

Back to the topic of the thread (all you arseholes should start yer own: this is about the Stones! ): I frequently cite the two, count 'em two, versions of Exile available on CD. (not counting the SACD version, if it's out) to my recording friends. Maybe that means all y'all... The first vesion is t...

Re: The Pains of turd polishing

Delays, heavy compression, hand percussion, reverb and punch-out editing can help.

Punching-out the drummer could make all y'all feel better, though.

Re: Recording a JCM 800 at 10!!!!

50 watt marshalls only have 2 power tubes, EL34's if it's a good one. Don't pull and play on just one, or it'll be " thar she blows! " I have an 800 (actually, 2, about 500 serial #'s apart), but it is a Silver Jubilee so it's like the between 800-900. It has an effect loop; I don't bother with that...

Re: help with dull mixes

I have a software prog that has a "master EQ" pre-set that rolls off 50Hz very steeply, and boosts between 7kHz and 20kHz to 16dB almost vertically up at the 7kHz and then evenly through 20k. It's pretty silly, but it has persuaded me that a good boost of 2-4 dB at 10kHz and up is often what I am mi...

No, and I never could listen to the whole song.

I feel sorry that you could!

Funnily enough, that thin C1000S sound makes for interesting backing vocal effects, too, as well as stacked rhythm guitars...

Re: Being insulted as an engineer

I like what Bear said: "But whatever, even if the sound isn't good, I see no reason to just give up. Instead, I prefer going apeshit."

I mean, it is rock and roll, and it's not like you can go apeshit everywhere...

And then there's compressors like the opto on my Joe Meek VC3Q that lend a certain sound to a vocal, or bass, or guitar, while smoothing.

Me, I do not use PT (I have CEP), but I would try a low-pass filter, as well.

Re: How do you record at low volumes?

Anvil road case. Put a cab or amp that you use as a cab (don't put a hot amp in it) and punch a hole for the mic. cord, put it on top of a couple pillows, throw a few blankets and leather jackets on top. Put it in a full closet. Rock.

Re: Time to be POSITIVE: Who are the quality new artists?

To mention some unmentioned stuff: Tift Merrit (alt-country type produced very nicely by Ethan Johns, somewhat like Kathleen Edwards, also good.) Chris Whitley's latest is good; the previous two were also very good. (He might have been mentioned already...) Steve Wynn's latest is all that you would ...

Re: Has anyone had a good experience with anything Berhinger

Another vote here for the B-1 microphone; blow-out price was US$69 online a few months back; makes a nice backup Chinee LD for backing vocals and acoustic guitar. Came with a decent shockmount and a silly foam windscreen, too.

Re: Low Budget Monitors

I use the Tannnoy 6.5 PBM II's, and love them. I also use the Rat Shack 5" and find them useful for comparison, along with some cheap Altec computer monitors, a Sony boombox set, etc.; I even have a pair of the Rat Shack's set up on the bedposts to make a sort of headphone listening experience when ...
