Re: multiple monitor placement?

How I use mine: Tannoy 6.5PBMII's with the tweeter at ear level, equilateral and toed in to my ears at 3'. Auratones on top, 5" Rat Shacks on top of those. Inna CD crate, much lower and I move it around, some Polk computer speakers right against each other. Oh, and a Tivoli in the middle of the desk...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I've that Shure but the version w/out the meter - what meter is half the fun. It's OK but I have other stuff - the Rane MS1B, for example, is similar (1 input) but better, IMNSFHO. What I wanted to say, for fuzzy pre that's cheap - Studio Projects VTB1. It was my second pre (I still use my first, Me...

Re: I-net collabs

That's cool. But of course, I just meant to be offering a option re collabin', and a way to get yer stuffs to others and receive theirs. By the same token, I really like the sound of the R16 for what it is, but what it is for me is a tape macheen for live jams, or to get drum performances. The work ...

Re: I-net collabs

Cool, good to know I'm not alone. markjazzbassist: a cheap computer (good-enuff XP Pro systems are on E-Bog for under US$200, just stay off internet), Reaper (US$60), an M-Track interface (US$100 new). Or, get a small SDHC digital recorder (for the XLR and 1/4" ins, usable converters) to transfer yo...

I-net collabs

Is anybody else doing internet collaborations here? For example, I have projects where the guitarist is in CA, and/or the drummer in Canada. I do a lot of stuff with a multi-instrumentalist in London. I used to do a lot with a drummer in WA (you 'round, mang ?). My local project only meets 1-2x a mo...

Re: (seemingly) Basic Frequency Question

Ah, I see, yeah, I confuzzed the two. So - I do use the spectrum meter but far less often, usually just as a quick way to find the the point to put a pass filter, or to ID the frequency where a drum has the most power, and occasionally to find harmonics. But the FFT is usually my go-to even for that...

spectrum meters aren't good for much except being pretty, ...
Really?

I use an FFT display all the time to locate artifacts (say, clicks, pops and exaggerated "s" sounds) all the time, particularly on lead vocal vocal tracks and at overdub points; also good for finding chair squeaks.

Re: "On kicks with different mics like ya do"

I've been using some side-address dynamics on amps quite a bit, a EV609, and a N/D3088. The 609 is said to be nice on snare ...

I also have a Superlux PRA-628 what is very similar to the 609 in appearance (but round rather than squared), a bit brighter in sound.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I picked up a EHX Knockout pedal, what is like a nice bass-boosting EQ, getcha some clean dub sounds.

And I bought another headless B2, this one in silver, with some flat wounds that I am loving.

Re: Let's talk guitar-amp simulators

To some extent. By what I mean, the "sound field" to the extent it interacts with the guitar is different between SS and tube amps. Or so I tell me. Plus, the soft-sims is gonna feed the guitar, but not the same unless, mebbe, you monitor thru a guitar cab ... And I can't imagine pedals would work t...
