Re: tube mics in high SPL situations

 I said, Luna", I meant "Sputnik".

It's OK, tho', I also have a Solaris.

FWIW, I roll 12AU7's in my various tube mics (not the Sputnik) - they don't always stay, but they do sometimes make a noticeable difference.

Re: tube mics in high SPL situations

I don't use tube mics for OH's as I don't trust the mic stands I bring, but I do use them for front of kit. (I use condensors - SDC Studio Project C4's or LDC AT4040's or sometimes CAD M179's there.) I particularly like the M-Audio Luna for that duty, altho' I believe it to be a rather "vintage" kin...

Re: Buck Owens show--impressed by the sound of the EV 666

If you like the RE11, you'll like the 635a. If the EV 600 series is good for pounding 10 pennies, than the the SM57 is for 8 pennies, and the RE11/635a types are good for finishing nails.

Hammered the hell outta that non-sensical metaphor, didn't I?

Re: Buck Owens show--impressed by the sound of the EV 666

I also use the 635a and the PL5 (same thing) frequently, and now that we know why we are being asked, well, I use I actually use it on mono acoustic guitars for inna rock mix. I've been known to just lay it on the desk in front of me, with the head hanging off, and play into it from about 6" away. I...

Re: Buck Owens show--impressed by the sound of the EV 666

The Senn 421 II and the EV RE320 are both a tranny-less variation of LD dynamics, and I think they have some very hi-fi-like characteristics, including clarity, large frequency range, and a certain quickness.

Re: Buck Owens show--impressed by the sound of the EV 666

I love that record, and the sound of the vox, altho' I don't think every choon has the 666, I'm pretty sure a few do. Somewhere there is a full vid of "The Death of Donny B" as it was being recorded. FWIW, while I've never used a 666 as I'm too cheap to buy one, the 664 (not the 664a) is said to use...

Re: Buck Owens show--impressed by the sound of the EV 666

I can't find a link right now but there is a cool video of Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3 recording "The Death of Donny B" for Northern Aggression, and Wynn is using a 666, and you can tell.

Re: DIY modding/fixing of gear, what voltages are dangerous?

There's a old auto mechanic's cliche:

It ain't the volts, it's the amps what kill you.

YMMV

Re: DIY modding/fixing of gear, what voltages are dangerous?

Doing a little reading is good but a couple of tips I have is wear rubber soled (tennies is fine) shoes, and try to only have one hand in contact with the amp at a time. And yes, learning how to discharge caps is good. FWIW, changing tubes with the amp on is not. I told a story elsewhere here the ot...

I think - I should check - Earle Mankey was the guitarist in Concrete Blonde?

EDIT: brother of the guitarist, James.

Re: Tube rolling 2018

I own a few (Ok, under 10) tube amps. I bought a bias meter, have read how to do it, seen the vids. In the past, I accidentally took 120v. futzing with a amp - reached back in immediately and did it again. Not uncommon, I'm told. Anywhat, I've never biased an amp, some of what I've been play...
