hey guys i just got my 12ay7 pre the other day, and was testing it out last night with some electric guitar. i found the at the input gain knob really didn't work ideally, like if i had it all the way down, i wouldn't peak the unit, but if i moved it slightly (we're talking millimeters) it would. i...

I own an SX302 and have another one on semi-permanent loan in my studio. I put it in a similar class as the M-Audio DMP3, although I like the Symetrix better. It isn't particularly flattering on anything, but it's clean, quiet, and delivers quite a bit of gain. It's also more solidly built than the ...

Re: Live to multitrack studio recording?
I'm almost embarassed that I've seen this, but... The Aerosmith "You Gotta Move" DVD has about 30 minutes of video footage from the recording of their "Honkin' on Bobo" album. As I recall, the whole band is crammed into a tight rehearsal space, with blankets strewn about everywhere. The drums were b...

Re: TM-D1000 recording to cubase
Hey, Jerfo, how do you like that TM-D1000? As with most things in life, there are things that I like about it and things that I don't like about it. On the plus side, it gives you lots of flexibility with digital input and output, the internal effects are nice, the EQ is usable and moderately flexi...

Re: TM-D1000 recording to cubase
I own a TM-D1000, so I might be able to offer some assistance. A stock TM-D1000 without any add-ons can't handle analog direct outs of channels 1-8 simultaneously. You can send a submix of channels 1-8 through Aux busses 1-4, and then you can send the analog output from those busses into your PC. Ho...

Re: Help me turn my bassist into Chris Squire
Here's an idea that might get you slightly closer to the "Chris Squire" sound. Duplicate your bass track. Then, run the duplicated track through a high pass filter @1k or so. That will effectively take all of the bass and low mids out of the track. Then, run the filtered track through the guitar amp...

Re: Budget Recording Space - South of Boston
Thanks a lot for taking a look at the site! I'll snap some pictures of the control room and post them to the site at some point in the near future. The room is a mess at the moment, so I need to get around to making it presentable before daring to photograph it. That said, there's not a heck of a lo...

Re: Sutra - potential Final mix
Thanks for the suggestion. When I first heard the tune, the verse seemed like an obvious place for the vocal distortion effect. I'll fiddle around with it and see if I can make it sound a little less cliched. I'll post the results here in a day or two.

Sutra - potential Final mix
Folks, I'd like to get your opinions on the mix to this song: http://www.jerfo.com/sounds/away3.mp3 . The instrumentation is very dense at times, so I'd like your thoughts on any issues with muddiness or anything else that is sonically pleasing/displeasing to your ears. Thanks! If you have any comme...

Re: Best mic pre under $200?
I'm very happy with the Studio Projects VTB-1, which you can find for $129. It allows you to blend its solid state sound with a starved-plate tube sound. While that might seem like a gimmick at this price point, I've found it to be quite handy. The "tube" acts as a colored compressor, which makes it...

Two words: David Sylvian. His "Dead Bees on a Cake" album gets the award for "Most Romantic CD With The Least Romantic Title." Just thinking about it gets me all...ummm...never mind. You can't go wrong with Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue" no matter which way you slice it. I find it to be a little less ...

Re: Recommend some Jobim & Joao Gilberto albums?
And BTW Astrud Gilberto is so out of tune that I can barely stand to listen to her. She was added for commercial viability because she sings in english, but from a musical standpoint it's like me playing hoops with the 2000 Olympic Dream Team. Hmmm...I've never had this reaction to her vocals, but ...
