Letters to Tape Op / Jan- Feb 2010
Hello. Was reading Letters to Tape Op and came across the " I am Disgusted" lack of support heading about manufacturers dropping support of products without notice. Larry, you fail here to understand the statement. Although you block out the name of the manufacturer with "XXX" I'm assuming this is a...

TAXI - Critiques, anyone had one?
Hello All, Recently there was some discussion on this board about a Taxi interview with John David Kalodner. Has anyone had their critique experiance? I have! Recently I had some CD's made by Discmakers and a free 1 song critique from Taxi was included with the deal. Out of curiosity I thought, what...

Re: Recording Magazine, TAXI and John David Kalodner
The reason for the record companies problems are clearly defined here..in regards to band members over 30 years of age... John says I don't think so, which is a pitiful, sad answer. I think that's one of those situations where that's the time the band should be selling its own music through the Inte...

Re: Recording Magazine, TAXI and John David Kalodner
Thanks for the link.... I guess this hype interview/ad is suppose to let the reader realize that Taxi is the shit and hooked up with the A&R people. The fact is that it's not the DIY culture, or MP3's that have cost profit loss to record companies... just poor selection of artists that they dump mil...

Re: Specific Alesis HD24 question
If your looking for a cheap but awesome CD recorder pick up a Tascam CDRW5000 on Ebay. I swear this thing sounds better and has more headroom then an ALesis Masterlink. It has digital I/O and the a/d converters are great. Also a great alternative to a Masterlink is a Roland VSR880 rack mount. Its an...

Re: new Helmet
Aftertaste has a more commercial edge to Paige Hamilton's drop D work. "Betty" is a masterpiece. One looking for an in your face recording should pick up "Betty". It is very dry, loud, and the mixes are unusual for this genre of music, compared to other groups from this era. The drum sounds especial...

Here is a neat trick when tracking...
Drum WorkShop makes remote cable operated Hi- Hats. These may not be good for every drummer, but for basic stuff on a basic set mount the hi-hat somewhere else! I always have one in the studio. Works real well.

Re: Why are my mixes so quiet?aka its amateur nite in the st
In regards to compressors. Thanks "professor" on the wonderful lesson. A novice can use a compressor to tame a mix by also adjusting attack and release times. An easy lesson would be to first set the attack at ZERO and release at 200ms. This in effect will set a brick wall limiter up. It will flatte...

Re: feeling a little confused?
Brian, I think you, missed my point. That being that the big labels have no interest in older releases. That is why some of the smaller indie labels such as Bomp are doing well. They are filling a market big corps have no need for. When I worked in radio as a Music director the library was very exte...

Re: feeling a little confused?
Personally, I'm disapointed that no one understood Napster, or file sharing. Which led to music biz "confusion". Before the internet there were thousands of independant BBS (bulletin board systems) run both by pros and hobbiests. There was lots of file sharing. ZIP files (PKZIP), or McCaffee, are 2 ...
