Indeed, there are not too many choices of modern unidirectional ribbon microphones. The only ones in current production I can think of are Beyer, Silvia SC-5C, and KU4, which are all small ribbon designs. Hope, this is OK to mention that at 133 AES we will be presenting two new models of unidirectio...

Re: Tape Op #75 Review of AKG C1000 Mod - What's Wrong with

My question is....the guy that did this is a hacker, noodler, right? No offense to him, I'm sure Mark Fouxman has skills, but my point is, I'm guessing he doesn't have the engineering talent or testing facilities that AKG has at their disposal. Dear Mike, You are the first person to ever call me "a...

Re: what's the 990 Mod! I wanna know I wanna know!!!

I have a 990, what are some circuit-mod/parts-swap ideas? Can't wait to try out a new recipe on an old mic. First, have some search on the forums (esp. www.groupdiy.com) for MXL603. It is basically the same microphone, but the 990 has much larger body, so you have much more room for quality parts. ...

Instead of D1/2 and C12 install a multiturn trimpot R8 and then adjust until you get 12V on C9/R6 junction (no capsule on). Or even better, 60V on VD2/VD3/Tr2 junction. Be careful, you need to take off a bolt, which is very close to a hair thin wire of Tr2. It is very easy for the screwdriver to sl...

Re: AC701 Tube Substitute

I am planning on building a Neumann M49 type microphone and I was wondering if there was any miniture tube that sounded similar to the AC701 and would work in that circuit. Those AC701's are crazy pricey. First, may I pay your attention that the AC701 is a subminiature tube. The miniature tubes are...

I bought a second set of mv691s that came with phantom-ready cables. The guy sent me a schematic of how he made the cables. I don't know anything about electronics, but I know the cables work! http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Dwd5yqb8As-Y6H4TLMl0JA Sorry, but this cable is not ideal solution. T...

To avoid any confusion:

The body D is 22.47mm.
The OD of the mounting ring of the diaphragm is 20.5mm.
The ID of the mounting ring (i.e. effective diaphragm diameter) is 16.75mm.

The QC is poor, and the two stock capsules sound different. Without A/B'ing capsules, obviously I can't speak to what improvements could be had, but I can't imagine they wouldn't be appreciable. There are no readily available capsules on the market to fit the 603 bodies. Unless you specifically ord...

Re: MXL 603 alt capsules

I'm looking for better capsules for some mod'd mxl 603s. Anyone know of any other capsules that will fit on the Chinese mic body and interface properly with the connector? Why would you want to change the capsule, first thing? Is there anything in particular what bothers you, or you just want to ch...

When you speak/sing into the mic it takes time for moisture to condensate on the diaphragm.

Re: Broken MXL 2003 - Fix myself or pay to replace?

First off I want to say Hi, as this is my first post here. A friend recommended this board to me today and having read TapeOp in the past I decided to join. Particularly because of my current issue. I have an MXL 2003 that I bought from someone. I bought it, came home and tried it out and loved it....

I'd directly contact Jon at ShynyBox. He has an excellent customer service and I am sure would take care of the problem.

Re: capsule leads to short

my question is about what type of wire to use. i'm not certain but IIRC at this section of the cicuit maintaining high resistence is important(hence the really tiny thin wires coming off the capsule) i dont remember why this was. maybe someone more knowledgable can explain. i believe it had somethi...
