Re: The drum "Wurst Mic" technique - Holy shit!

Today I tried an M88 peaking over the rim of the BD, with no additional processing and it sounds really cool. Just a nice added beef to the sound. The player wasn't great, so I think I may lay into this mic a lot for the mix.

It seems to me that taking an afternoon to learn more about Audition and/or Grargeband would really streamline your process.

It works really well and the tapes last just fine. We replace the tapes from time to time. As others mentioned, starting with some...

John Vanderslice's studio Tiny Telephone, wow. That dude and studio seem awesome, his recording philosophy and studio philosophy (free tape, free weed, free coffee) is sweet. i need to make a record there one day.
John's an incredible guy, a wonderful songwriter and an amazing presence.

Re: The drum "Wurst Mic" technique - Holy shit!

I used to do this all of the time. It often worked better as my destroyed by pumping compression or distortion mic to blend than the room mic did. I don't know why I stopped, I'm gonna bring back the crotch mic! That's me general M.O. as well. One of the BEST results I ever got was an EV408 into an...

I don't get the sweats, though I'm regularly surprised I've never gotten a "What the hell is this, SanFilippo?" email from Craggs.

I'm not sure what you consider cheap, but there's a Lexicon PCM60 on Reverb for $400. Those things are really great on drums.
