Re: Re:

Digging up old threads then commenting. My favorite internet past time. On Dark Side : . . . They're not being played very hard, and there's not much ambient quality to the recording that would identify the drum brand by sound. I'm supposing "ambience" here, or lack thereof, is the natural room sou...

Re: SONY reel to reel

wrap the tape around the hub of the take up reel with at least one overlap and you should be able to make it have enough tension to run.

Then, go watch some youtube videos and do real tape flanging!

Re: Guidelines & Best practices for Vinyl masters?

If you mix the crowd peaks down just a tad you should be fine. I like using Jeff Powell in Memphis to cut and then Welcome to 1979 for plating, or just having both done at '79. The real bonus is that the plating gets done very shortly after the lacquer is cut, and that can be critical. Lacquer, by i...

Re: Any CLASP users out there?

You might try Mara Machines in Nashville. At one time they has done some with with the CLASP system, but that was a while back.

Re: Otari MX-5050 Playback Issue

I'd guess that there's a transport issue of some sort. I'd sit by the deck and watch to see if the tape is lifting off or riding up and down a tad when the high frequency dips happen.

If it were an MCI I'd suggest an analog torque board adjustment. I'm not sure what the Otari answer is.

Beyer makes this one rn the successor to the Opus 88

Those have always intrigued me as well. I'm a Beyer nut... They do sound the best of all the mics in that video, by far.

obviously definitely not on the horizontal where the cymbals are setup - unless you want something totally verkakte :) -- between there and the floor where the height of the room's effect on the frequency response sounds the least combified - main reason being to get the closer shell sound/mellow t...

Re: Redux: Condensers on toms

I recently picked up one of the sE X1-D to use on outside kick -- it was on sale for $99 and I liked the idea of a $99 mic on kick vs something much more expensive. I actually like the way it sounds. It has a titanium diaphragm so its kinda snappy sounding but also no problem with SPLs and bottom e...

Re: Weathervane overhead

many times putting those mics equidistant from the kick impact sounds more solid - worth a try I like to think of a center line of where the BD beater hits and the center of the snare when I'm placing overheads. that's a smart move and I'll start there often myself - at least when I'm doing a vanil...

Re: "smash channel" options, for drums... sans console?

Good point! I should reach out to the couple of manufacturers that I was thinking about, and ask if “dual output” is within their spec or not. that MIGHT work... I have the Radial 6 pack workhorse and there's a weird impedance thing that happens when you have the XLR and DB25 simultaneously connect...

Re: Weathervane overhead

Brian McTear was asked about hard panning, and he said that he only goes out to like 40% each side. It is more about the center mic holding the kick and snare in the middle, while the left and right are added in for some detail. Cool, thanks. I've been thinking about an LCR setup for overs for shit...
