Re: Romancing The (bad) Past

Aww man I’ve done some live shows to Tascam 388, turned out way cool. As it happens, this actually can be more reliable than doing a hard disk recording sometimes, because you’re not subject to vibrations and computer glitches. Sweet. I 388 in a club. You must have really been the envy of all the b...

Re: Romancing The (bad) Past

Live recordings are a unique experience, I'd hate to add old intermittent tube mics and tape deck to it. Those cats were much braver than I!

Re: Vocal Recording Question

I agree with the guys above. Keep using the things you think make the mix better, and skip the things that don't. ON the delay and reverb, are you inserting them, or running them on aux sends? If you're inserting them, try to put them on and aux insert fed from a send on the vocal track. It gives yo...

Re: Using reverb to differentiate lead and backing vocals

Most times when I use reverb I spend a good amount of time getting the predelay "right." Especially reverb used for vocal. I oft concerned about intelligibility, and that is where spending time with predelay seems to be quite beneficial. I often only have one reverb for all the vocals, but vary the ...

yeah, but $1500!

I still go with a Radial JDI for most DI work. only $199.

of course I do put that into a 1073 clone pre.
Recently I've been using the DI on an LA-610 and wondering why I haven't used it more.
Seems like a lot of people really like the 610 as a bass DI.

Re: Bass Plugins

There are a ton of records where the bass is DI only. Unless the bass or something in you chain is "bass deficient" I don't think a DI in and of itself is the problem. I have the R-bass from when they gave it out for free. I don't use it often, but a lot of the time, I'm trying to add some lows to a...

If replacing the mixer isn't an option, I'd be looking heavily at the FMR RNC. Those are great-sounding, very flexible stereo compressors that cost less than $100 per channel.

It looks like it would be pretty useful. There are tons of tube sources. Let us know if you bite the bullet.

Re: electrovoice 635A

Here's a record where I used a 635a on one of the guitars (I think the right side, I'll check later). Pretty straight ahead garage rock. A fun band called Gnu Kung Fu.

Re: electrovoice 635A

Percussion overdubs can be really great with a 635a. As Dave mentioned drum room, taped to the floor like Albini is also great. Guitar amps, especially punk and garage type things.. Room mics for acoustic or electric guitars. I'm trying to think if I've done hors with them or not. Yeah, I dig 'em. I...

Re: Advice on next steps to move setup forward

Consider a 2-track tape machine over a multitrack. Simpler, cheaper and still quite useful. As a mixdown format, or something to bounce elements to for color.... or both? I just mix to mine, but I know Mara does a whole presentation on using a 2-track for processing as well. I should probably do so...

Re: Advice on next steps to move setup forward

You've mentioned TWICE that clients wonder where the console is. So... Think seriously about a console, something cool and small/vintage will add the cache that means something on potential client's first visit. When I was putting my room together 13-14 years ago, I was forced to but a new console f...
