Re: Best Saturation For Specific Instruments

The E mode is the one I never use. Something about it just doesn't do it for me, but I could see how it could be cool on the mix buss since it does that smiley face thing a bit. I'll have to try it some more. Definitely get the Tchad presets. They're great. Currently using 2 of them on the vocals f...

Re: Best Saturation For Specific Instruments

I like Soundtoys Decapitator a lot. Even more since I downloaded Tchad Blake's presets. Those are a lot of fun. I've found it's most valuable in a less-is-more sense. Love it on vocals and damn near everything else, just in small doses. I haven't successfully used it on 2-buss yet. I have tried tho...

Re: tricks to make stereo pads more interesting in the mix?

If you have an actual console/mixer it might be worth it to do a pass where you (or maybe a band member who is less 'intimate' with the part) to do an on the fly pass with the faders, routing it back into the computer as a new audio track. The idea of a purely instinctual level manipulation, reactin...

Re: Tascam 388 Muddy Recording

You should clean the heads and guides every time you use the machine. If there was some grime on the record head when you tracked that guitar part, it will always playback the way it it. Have you tried recording another track since cleaning? I would try recording on the same track, and the others af...

Looking at it, I can't see how it won't be the coolest thing you have in the rack,

Seriously, find some dudes who are into broadcast gear, that's what it may have originally been used.

Re: Sennheiser MD504 vs current “e604”

I used a 408 on a guitar amp last weekend. I hadn't used it in a while, and damn if it didn't sound great. Noted! I’m probably gonna sell these off, because I typically use my Beyerdynamic m160’s, but I’m tracking guitars in a few weeks, so I’ll give these a spin. I'll be interested to hear what yo...

EV 408's are useful mics. Pretty natural/neutral. I use them for guitar amps a lot, after I saw a real engineer in a real studio using them and getting great sounds.

Re: Oktava mk 012 hypercardioid capsules

I'm pretty sure Chris Garges uses the Hyper caps on toms A LOT. Joel Hamilton and a bunch of the Brooklyn guy were into them on toms, I believe with the hyper caps. I have all three caps, but don't use the hypers much for anything. I should try one on snare sometime.

Re: Your favorite general use eq plugin

The PT EQ, especially the one band for cutting/fintering lows. Sometimes for other things. The T-rack Pultec or PSP NobleQ for obvious color. I like the Wave API and Helios a lot. I fing TDR SlickEQ really great, because I like clicking through the different models to see what's best. I also really ...

Re: Waddaya's workin' on this Forf weekend?

There's an acoustic song that's been giving an artists a hard time, so that's been a bit of the focus. I'm reviewing the new Rode TF-5, and they sound quite nice on acoustic guitar.

Kind of a light weekend.

In you first example, with the box closed, are you playing a dobro, or is that what the "chamber" of the box does to the sound of the guitar?

Tried that once a long time ago. It wasn't horrible, but I'm not going there anymore.

Re: Mixing with the band there

I discovered quite accidentally that I preferred mixing without the band present. It was when I first opened my room. People were supposed to show, but I got a message that they needed to start later. I decided to just get going, and the mix shaped up nicely. So nicely, in fact, that I printed it to...

Re: Printing An Effect To Its Own Tape Track

This is something I've done a ton of times. More often its with a slightly weird thing that I think I'm not going to get back when it comes to mix time. Print the effect to another track and then its always there.

Ny thought is if things are paid for, they are worth having around, unless you hate them, or are trying to fund something else.
