Re: DAW as live mixer suggestions

Can you rent an actual PA? There's gotta be someone with an X32 near you.

Re: Cymbals Eat Snare

Just have to note that it is entirely possible to wear ear plugs and goggles and still balance your kit correctly and/or play at a quiet volume. Drums are fucking loud and playing them without ear protection is not an option (for me anyway). Also I have never, ever understood drummers wanting/needi...

Re: Cymbals Eat Snare

Totally depends on the type of song/type of music though. 'Twas a joke. :D Awhile back I did a cover of Metallica's cover of Blitzkrieg's "Blitzkrieg" (I never tire of writing that), I pretty much copped Lars' part (except, you know, in time ) and I'm pretty sure there's more crashes on that one so...

Re: Favorite Hardware Reverb Unit

Lately I am enjoying the Roland 3030. It's kind of aggravating to use, as it's "intuitive interface" is not actually very intuitive. It also loses the 100% wet setting whenever a power cycle it, which is every day. It gets too hot to leave on when not in use. I mean really really hot . But it give ...

RIP Francis Manzella

Studio designer Fran Manzella passed away this weekend. Besides designing a ton of great studios, Fran was a sweet guy and fun to hang out with. I was lucky enough to have dinner with him and a few others at Pot Luck Con several years back.

Re: RIP, Jamie Oldaker

I missed this. What a drag. I went through a Clapton phase in high school. I had a live video of the Behind the Sun tour with Jamie and Duck Dunn on bass that I about wore out.

Re: 16 more channels of analog compression

I remember Steve Albini saying the RNC is as good as other compressors several times its cost, for whatever that’s worth. I believe that's true. I used to have 3, and still have 2. I did drum parallel with one for YEARS and should go back to it. I didn't/don't use really nice mode nearly as much as...

Re: Doors?

My friend owns the former Room and Board studio in Nashberg. As I recall the booth doors are actually 2 fairly heavy doors that have a gasket of some sort to glue them together. Maybe not the prettiest thing, but probably pretty effective.

I'm gonna do a jam where I pan the kick and snare hard left and right just to upset everyone. All toms and cymbals straight up the middle. or maybe 15% left.
BWAHAHHAHAHA.

I will totally HATE that, but go for it anyway. If the music is cool, I'll get over it.

Re: Clip-On Tuners?

Yeah, I'd say a Snark or a smartphone app is great for just hanging out and strumming. I prefer a pedal or rack unit for recording, but I don't have evidence they're actually more accurate. More of a trust issue really. I worked with a guitar player last week, who has super sensitive ears, trained ...

I've got a Useful Arts tube DI here for review. Schedule has gotten goofy, so I haven't used it as much as planned.
