Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I got a Useful Arts SFP60. I got it into the rack, but haven't used it yet. Tomorrow afternoon I'm going to make some demos with just 2 mics experimenting with the color section of the Useful Arts. Here's before and after shots of the racks. https://www.gearslutz.com/board/attachments/so-much-gear-s...

Re: UA Luna

Honestly, I heard something new was coming, and when I heard it was a DAW I checked out. I literally have zero interest in trying to learn more software.

Re: Ribbon dilemma.

Distortion, as in electrical? Or mechanical? As others have said, holding the mic horizontally and rotating it, listen for a metallic "clank", this would be a sign of a slack ribbon. Tapping the body resulting in ringing would be resonance that can be tamed by putting a piece of foam in the lower p...

Re: recording group vocals

Especially with kids, I'd want something drying up the space, unless the space is pretty dry sounding. If you're doing multiple passes, I suggest moving the kids around between takes, so you don't have a bunch of tracks with one kid (Kid A  ), dominating ALL the tracks.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

Tony is showing great restraint by not commenting on the 57. which as stated, can be perfectly fine for the right situation, but I would not call it "unhyped". It's more anti-hyped. The right situation being holding a window open that keep slamming shut. Or possibly beating an intruder.

Re: Ribbon dilemma.

The distortion happens when you touch the mic? That does seem odd.

I'd just be sure to mute it anytime I wanted to move it around the room.

Maybe open it up and check/repair the soldering.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

bass drum is hard af to record well imho You're not kidding there. I'm always trying different things. Today I tracked a song for a remote client with only 6 open channels on his hard disk recorder. I had to blend an in and out mic to 'tape.' Usually not a huge problem, but I'm also playing, so the...

Re: bare bones interface: emphasis on converters?

I've used a couple of Stienberg models doing a small chamber ensemble, A UR22 and a UR44 AFAIR. Both sounded really nice, using the onboard pres and sE T2 in XY. Now you can get them with the Rupert Neve Designs transformers. I've considered a 4 channel version to do occasional remote things.

If I bought it new, I have the box. I'm lucky that there is an attic above my control room, so there's plenty of space for them.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic

I wouldn't necessarily consider a D112 to be scooped. It's pretty mid-heavy to my ears. I'll second drumsounds' recommendation for the M88. I've had good luck with that. RE20 isn't a bad choice either, but it's less instantly gratifying, IMO. The bonus with buying either one, is you also have a gre...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Cool stuff. Those bells cut through the live mix nicely. I've often thought my next band would be a little more multi-instrumental, pop orchestra business and wondered about glockenspiel live. These seem like one way to get it done. Sounds like a cool project. I used to carry vibes to acoustic duo ...

Re: RIP, Neil Peart

He was such a huge part of my musical development. Rush taught me how to play odd time signatures and Neil himself, the concept of compositional drum parts. From the Rolling Stone obit: At one point, he got in trouble for pounding out beats on his desk during class. His teacher’s idea of punishment ...
