Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?

Thanks for the pointers, everyone. I've learned a few things: Sweetwater's category of suitable amps is hidden in the studio monitors category. I discovered Nelson Pass is selling a new little stereo Mosfet amp kit - not what I'm looking for in this instance, but tempting in general. That ART could...

Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?

I have a newer Crown XLS something or other. The fan only cycles on once in a blue moon. I came on today for the first time in a while, and only ran a minute or so +/-. It sounds better than the Alesis that was supposed to be temporary.

Re: fader setup for 500 series preamps

Is there a fader or a mixer with very little inside that can work exclusively with 500 series boxes? Nothing getting in the way of the sound. Just faders basically . Not sure how Id work out aux sends. Not quite faders, but the Little Labs redcloud https://littlelabs.com/redcloud.html could be help...

Re: how would you record a six piece doo wop group?

omg ! great Idea to create options time permitting - just not gonna happen I have 8 tracks in ye olde home studio to utilize - prolly should have mentioned surprised I'm gettin' more "use a lotta mics" and less "do it around one like the old days" Do you mean 8 inputs, or an 8-rack recorder? If you...

Re: how would you record a six piece doo wop group?

Figure 8s for the guitars and the player's vocals for sure. Might work for the other singers, too, or maybe cardioid with the singers not playing guitars facing the ones playing guitars so the back of the mic is facing the guitars. Hopefully the bass amp can be low enough to not be all over every mi...

Re: Servicing AT mics

Niiiiiiice. I played with Bitter Boy, the Weird Sisters and Spiritual Twins in that era. Plus a bunch of on off things like Spaghetti West, and some gigs with Blanch Black (From Phil 'n the Blanks 'fame').

Re: Servicing AT mics

Ha! Yeah, I used to know Gary Elvis pretty good from Lounge Axe, also - he was damn good on FOH, did sound for my band(s) one or twice't. I seem to recall he had some health problems; he certainly looks a lot skinnier. I think he did sound for The Bottle Rockets, so roscoenyc might know him ... I d...

Re: Servicing AT mics

:P 2003, you missed out on an intimate performance of some intense post-hardcore rock music. I'm not sure if I knew about the tomb then. I totally would have come. I didn't know the Service guys until the became New Duncan Imperials. We used to play shows with them in Chicago from time to time. Gre...

Re: Servicing AT mics

Yeah, I lived next to T&J's above the law offices 1 year, then in the loft's behind T&j's on the next block East. Beer nuggets, ha! Forgot those ... Watermelons and alligator shots ... There were tunnels under Otto's; best show I saw there was Green on Red. Did you know The Service guys? Aiiight, e...

Re: Tracking Unusual Instruments

Cockatiels. I used a ribbon mic (one of the Tape Op group buy mics). I never finished the project. I was going to do a fake New Age album with soothing classical guitar and rain sticks with the shrill hateful sounds of angry cockatiels. Thing is, my cockatiels would go into soothing, sweet songs wh...

Re: Servicing AT mics

I went to school in DeKalb myself. NIU class of '92. Go Huskies! Indeed! Class of '85. 8) I worked at McCabes for 3 years ... ate a lotta Sgt. Pepper's ... and that gyro place on the main drag (Tom Jerry's?) ..., Wild Bill's, The Crystal Pistol (I think that closed), Lincoln Inn, Pizza Villa ... Be...

Re: Servicing AT mics

I wondered that. For some reason I assumed a capsule would be pricier- heart of the microphone and all, but I suppose it's still one piece of the puzzle. The only other thing I can think of in that mic that might cost $100 in the transformer. With intermittent noise issues that's probably just as g...

Oh, I don't know, I always wanted a JC amp ...
Shit, I forgot about those. Yeah, put it on my list too. If I found one of the smaller ones cheaply, I'd snag it.

Re: Servicing AT mics

Well, the good news is the mic is back. I didn't keep very good track but that had to be 3 weeks or less from when I sent it to when I got it. The $146 had a $100 charge for "replaced element". I'd love to know what the element was. The rest was a mere 1/2 hour of labor. I'll be plugging it in this...
