Re: Summer of Soul

Some pretty incredible stuff in that movie. I believe ?uestlove is seeing some award nominations for it.

Re: Happy Black Friday! Did you get anything?

I got the Rupert Neve Designs compressor a few weeks ago, so I'm done buying for a while... Was hoping Toontrack would have SD3 on sale, but no luck. So I spent the same amount of money on a reconditioned Herman Miller Mirra chair for my office, which I'm converting into "studio b", a cozy little wr...

Re: BEATLES GET BACK DISCUSSION

I started in last night, but zonked off. It's pretty cool to hear early jams of things. I need to plan my viewing better.

Re: TEAC 80-8 help?

2 sounds like a tension issue. Something isn't applying enough tension somewhere. I know how to deal with this on an MCI, but not on a machine like yours.

Do you have the manual? There should be something in there.

I've always just thrown a mic in front of my Fender and hit the record button. Or have the engineer do it.
I finally tried throwing an omni dynamic, a 635A, in front of my Fender.

Finally it sounds like I hear it, with no EQ on the mic.
I really like 635a on amps sometimes.

Re: Re getting guitar sounds

Something I learned from my old boss was to have the player play the song we're about to record. He would listen and then adjust one knob, and listen again. Then he might make a tweak on a different knob, and then listen. Even if he thought in his head "it's too bright, needs more gain, and less re...

Re: Is this a triggered snare sound?

Seems quite possible that it's triggered. You can bounce around the video and it pretty much sounds the same. Even the best players have some variation...

Re: McCartney 3,2,1

And up until the White Album, the console AND tape machines were tube, the 8-track 3M machine showed up for that record, but those are not tins sounding at all. The REDD desks were still in play, full of tube circuitry. The TG desks (which Geoff Emmerick and others were said to dislike) were only a...

Re: McCartney 3,2,1

There's a lower mid range thickness/richness/density to things like a solo'd vocal stem or bass track - where they are clear but not bright or harsh in anyway. They just feel velvety, rubbery and massively big. Several factors. To my best recollection, from working with people of that generation: 1...

Re: McCartney 3,2,1

Did any of you watch this? It's a fun watch and I was struck by how good the isolated tracks sound when they pull them up and part of me right away thought "i bet they did some sweetening here" - maybe they did - everything sounds so fat and rich and buttery. I don't wanna go too far down the rabbi...

Re: Fostex E-16 FF & RW Slowly... Plus newb issues.

I'm having this exact issue on an E-16 I just bought. I paid a bit over $2000 for the whole package with shipping. Hoping something can be done because I don't think I can return it. The FF and RW won't work very well. I can see the reels starting to turn but only very very slightly. I don't know i...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I sold a tape machine and pulled the trigger on a Rupert Neve Designs 5424 Diode Bridge compressor. I only had a little time to play with it yesterday, but it is very creamy, and not subtle unless you attempt to make it that way. I'm planning to do my first mix on it tomorrow. Today I'm doing revisi...

It's kind of shocking that a $3500 mic doesn't have a pad or HPF.

Sure. I'm the client and I don't object. Unmastered mix, 24bit 48k Wav - https://www.dropbox.com/s/w5uujaxwwdbeeaq/01%20I%20Never%20Needed%20A%20Friend%20-%20Oct%207%20-%20Final%20-%2024b-48k.wav?dl=0 The Steel & reverb are in the chorus and bridge sections. Steel panned right (at around 3 o'clock)...
