Re: Tracks imported from Mackie DL32R are hissing. They weren't before.

I figured it out. It's not the Mackie's fault. It's Audition! Whenever I render the individual wav files as a batch process, it adds noise to random tracks. I have no idea why, but that's where it's happening. I have to render my individual wav files one by one, but it works- without noise! Has any...

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

If it sounds good stop buying gear and just make records. Fuck all these forums and gear marketing. Oops, did I say that? Many years ago I was recording something with Steve Gursky, who used to be on the forums as “Loudist”. I asked him something like “Steve. You recorded CSN with the SM7. What was...

Re: Mixing a band with a single, mono electric guitar

When I know I'm doing a single guitar, no other chordal instrument, minimal thing, I put 2 mics on the guitar amp. I generally use mics that sound somewhat different, but haven't don't 2 different amps in forever. Panning will vary, but this is one of the times I don't mind hard panning, thought I'm...

Re: Tracks imported from Mackie DL32R are hissing. They weren't before.

Is the second song significantly softer? Could it be that the s/n ratio was just better on the first one? Nope. Once I started hearing the noise, I went back and reopened the original track I had mixed. It's got the same noise problem on the same tracks! The s/n ratio on the normal tracks is fine, ...

How would you guys assemble a N'awlins Funeral Procession/Sally Army style brass section?
Do you mean placement in the space?

Re: Monitor dilemma

NS10 (and I assume the CLAs) are not good sounding speakers. They can give you certain information, and that can be good, but they are kinda rough to listen to. I had a pair for a few years, and even when I'd try to commit and do the bulk of a project using them, it was always really hard to follow ...

I played my accompanist gig in the morning, and then got some mixes onto a drive for a listening party tomorrow.

Re: New Orleans style horn section

The core instruments are piano/upright bass/drums, maybe electric guitar. The horns are accompanying that core, so I think switching to tuba for these brief sections would be too big a change. I'm definitely not an arranger, and never have played horns in my life. Well, as a kid I used to mess arou...

Re: moving from huge live room to small one

If you're altering the house, you need to consider what that does to the resale value, and insurance. You also need to realize that you may be skirting laws and pissing off neighbors if you're going to run a business from your new home. If you do alter the normal living space, you can possibly drill...

Several rugs would allow you to "tune" the room for different situations.

Re: The drum "Wurst Mic" technique - Holy shit!

Today I tried an M88 peaking over the rim of the BD, with no additional processing and it sounds really cool. Just a nice added beef to the sound. The player wasn't great, so I think I may lay into this mic a lot for the mix.
