Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques

If I go spaced it's usually toward the outside of the set, and I drop a mic cable too the floor to make sure then they are off axis for anything. I'm not understanding this. Sorry, late night. you don't want your spaced pair's capsules "looking" directly at any drum or cymbal? That is correct. Cymb...

Re: OH and room drum mic Techniques

I'm mostly an ORTF on an angle bisecting the BD and SD. If I go spaced it's usually toward the outside of the set, and I drop a mic cable too the floor to make sure then they are off axis for anything. I have been thinking about trying a 'close spaced pair' with a slight angle outward. It's somethin...

Re: RIP Chris Garges @cgarges

I bought some monitors from Mitch Easter recently and that rabbit hole brought me back to the TOMB for the first time in several years. An article about Mitch mentioned the news about Chris. I mainly knew him through the forum but one day on a whim, I bid on a Topaz board on eBay and won it. Realiz...

Re: Mark Rubel RIP

Losing Mark is huge. He was one of my dearest friends. I put a thread on the Creative Recording section that has more details. He had pancreatic cancer that spread to his liver.

Re: RIP Mark Rubel

Thanks, man.

I love that one too. The picture is great, and a total Mark thing.

I once bought him a photo book called "Extraordinary Chickens." I gave it to him at a conference, and later that weekend when we played together, we called the band Mark Rubel and the Extraordinary Chickens.

Yeah, it's a good one. I've been using a '69 (same compressor but has pres, a DI and only BIG only works in stereo) for for over 20 years.
Are they still made in UK?
I couldn't tell you. I'm sure a dealer could.

Lovely remembrance, Tony. I only had the chance to meet and talk with Mark a few times, but knew instantly what a kind and generous person he was.
Yeah, he just oooozed kindness.

RIP Mark Rubel

It is with a heavy heart that I inform the community that Mark Rubel passed away yesterday in his home in Nashville. Mark wasn't much of a forums guy, but he was deeply committed to making music, making records, and teaching recording and engineering. Mark spent most of his life in Champaign Illinoi...

Re: Mic pre in pedal form?

I think Electro Harmonix made something like that. Maybe called 12ay7. Joel Hamilton was into it for a while I think. You might be able to search and find it.

Re: Heritage Audio Britstrip

I got a good deal on a Brand new Neve DPX for £1197 per channel $3034 for Two Neve Pre amps and EQ Leaves me extra money for more hardware or another mic. So just need to check out those compressors suggested to compliment it. I figured I can also add another Bus EQ down the line…. What compressors...

Re: Non-functionnal reel-to-reel: should I fix before selling?

I'd look for listings to see if anyone else is in the same boat, to give you an idea of what they're going for. If you're not the handy type, I'd suggest selling them as is/ for parts. You'd probably spend more on a tech than you'd be able to sell them for. But, there are probably folks out there wh...

Re: Your favorite tips & resources on working with tape

There is a tape calibration article in one of the early years of the magazine. It's a basic 'how to' of setting levels and bias. I don't remember if it gets into azimuth and such. Understanding the actual real estate of a multitrack machine is important. You have to plan certain things in advance so...

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

I often use my console pres for everything, save for vocals. But I've actually used my Great River MP2 a bunch lately on guitars and it's sounding great. It's one of the old white faced model that Dan Kenedy said became too expensive to continue producing. There is a 2 channel and a 4 channel on Rev...
