Re: Does anyone use overheads?

When I checking the drums I start with the overheads. They give a general picture, but I do very much like close mics. I usually have room mics going as well. How much of the sound is OH vs close mics and how much of the room I'm using depends on a multitude of things, mostly the production, but the...

Re: Noob: Routing a Mixer w/Converters

I believe most folks take each channel/input to the DAW discreetly, 1:1 if you will. If you're not using the mixer's mic inputs, you can then come out of the DAW on a 1:1 ratio as well. If you want to use the mixer mic pres, you'll either need enough channels for a mic input and a separate line inpu...

Re: Mics that sound like a U67..

I used one of the Advanced Audio 67 clones on a project a few years back. It was mostly stuck on grand piano duties but it did a great job and sounded beautiful. The build quality was decent but was more of the top shelf off shore variety than classy German manufacture. I just review this mic for t...

Re: MS drums with mono OH - variants?

I looked like a reliable engineer nerd when I located it and fixed the problem. The best feeling. This is why they pay us the big bucks. Well, at least some bucks... right? This is half the reason I take out the tape measure for a spaced pair OH setup. It makes them feel like I'm doing something ar...

How about those 57's, Tony? Looking good, aye? You can see the Floor Tom-side at4050 between the top of the ride and bottom of the far crash.
Do you love your 4050? They were getting a lot of hype around here a while back and they've really become accessible on the used market.
They are great mics.

Re: How high do you like your overheads (and why)?

If they're overhead at all, I tend to prefer them not too high - maybe just below the height of my chin when I'm standing up so only really just high enough to avoid being in the phasey edge-wash of any of the cymbals and in some kind of ORTF (though usually not pointing as far apart as ORTF, I do ...

Re: MS drums with mono OH - variants?

I find GJ has an annoying compromise in that if I go for stereo width (hard panning the over/side mics), the ride sits too far to the side and tom fills on some kit setups go sideways across the soundstage and it's totally unrealistic, Yeah, I find most two mic overhead situations (at least visuall...

Re: Client woes... Trying to please a singer...

Or in other words, I may sound dismissive here but I work hard to understand my clients! But, reference tracks usually lead pretty much nowhere for me! I don't mind when I get a mix of influences to get a general idea. A group of songs and artists gets me in the neighborhood of where their heads ar...

Re: How high do you like your overheads (and why)?

Generally I have overheads kind of low. A little higher up than the drummer's head (when standing). I don't want or need space in the OH sound, that's what room mics are for. I mostly use an ORTF pair placed with the snare and BD in the center. I kind of wish I raised the OHs a bit last week, as the...

Play to their wallet, that usually stops their crazier ideas.
This does tend to work very well.

My comment to these kind of clients: "Yeah, um, none of the records you like were made they way you are attempting to work right now."
I need to remember this one.

Re: Equality, Equiibrium, what have you!! EQ plugs..

I feel like I have too many plugin EQs and that I don't have one I'm totally in love with. I may like the free TDR Slick EQ best. I use the Waves API in spurts. I'll dig them for a while and then I'll leave it alone. I really like the tone of the McDSP AE400 even if I'm not using the dynamic aspects...
