Re: Tube amp guru, help me

What's your wall voltage? 120, I suppose. Horribly naive question but ........ why do you ask? (cause wall voltage affects performance and tube life?) Yes, higher wall voltage raises all the voltages in the amp. So if your screens are right at their limit (440v for JJ's for example) at around 120V,...

Re: Tube amp guru, help me

I've learned a few times over the years that 3 is the magic number for tries to really verify whether or not you are just unlucky with tubes. If you are gonna have to ship the amp back anyways or whatnot, it might be worth the gamble. another quick note; I've been fooled with microphonics before. I ...

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

I don't THINK I see any zener diodes. Do they ever look black like generic/schottkey diodes? There's a couple that look they're coming off of and bridging the outer legs on that voltage regulator, but I can't read the numbers to see what they are. They sometimes do look like that. Double check with...

Either way, if it was a problem with one of the pres, I should have gotten a solid 48v from the pinout in the chassis, right?
Yeah, sounds like a problem with the chassis.

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

Can you take stuff out easily? You could pull each unit one by one and re-test, there may be a chance one of them is faulty and effecting the rest. Disclosure: I've never owned a 500 series anything. I wouldn't worry about, or F with reading amps that much since that's when stuff tends to get toasted.

Re: limiting busses in rock music - digital

In lieu of this thread I thought I would share a really fun limiter plugin I just found. It's the D16 Frontier Self-Adaptive Limiter. Some of you may know, but if you get an issue of Computer Music magazine you get a fantastic plugin suite with some real gems, including this. I just updated mine and...

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

Grab yourself an auto-ranging digital multimeter (a must have tool for life in general). Set it for DCV (DC voltage), touch the black lead to pin 1 of the XLR from the pre (or the case if it's metal and that's easier), that's ground. Now touch the red lead to either pin 2 or 3, while still holding b...

Re: BBE Sonic Maximizer

I was just kidding. It's slightly embarrassing to ask persistent questions about widely reviled pieces of gear, I should know. At least there's no obnoxious answers like "the only way to use it properly is to throw it out" type answers, so common on other forums. Those are neither clever nor helpfu...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

Do you want a DI that's going to add to/change the sound coming off the guitar or something that's just going to give you the pickup? Chris Garges Charlotte, NC I don't even know really. The main use would be for reamping rock guitars, but will be used for pretty much all the standard DI things if ...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

What does going through a DI into your interface buy you, vs. straight in? Needs a through output. Interfaces never have those (that I know of anyway). Yeah, but good point brought up earlier that I just need a splitter to achieve the same thing. I may just do that, or I've been looking at the hamm...

Re: instrument DI box bang-for-buck

Get yourself a Radial JDI and be done with it. You'll have and use it forever. Hmm, that one wasn't really even on my radar yet. My thought was instead of anything around $200 I might just go all out for the Neve. Or, a Warm Audio, something more eccentric.. Used around $100-130 though... a used Co...

instrument DI box bang-for-buck

I'd like a DI mostly for getting a direct track when tracking mic'd guitars. I've always used my interface for non-thru DI (which is good) or a sansamp bass driver for bass. I've done some research, but it seems to be mostly marketing talk. Basically I would love to have someone tell me to get a sim...
