Thanks From Larry Crane

Many thanks to a bunch of you regular Message Board contributors for the present you sent me last week! Everyone needs a SM57 appreciation trophy in their studio! I'm humbled and honored. Happy Holidays to everyone, and may the New Year be another good one!

Re: Omni overheads with amps in the same room?

Like M. Ludwig said, your off axis freq response of an omni will be much more clear, a balance of frequencies instead of just muddy tones like a cardioid. This is good and bad, but for a roomy record can sound great. I use Earthworks like that a lot and like the sound. You should experiment with all...

Re: Elliott smith's guitar.

All I remember was the cheap Yamaha and a Rickenbacher 6 string that he left at jackpot!. Later he had 2 identical guitars, I thought they were 335 but probably Epiphone versions. But it didn't matter, it was all in his fingers anyway. He'd show up w/o any guitars sometimes for sessions and use my c...

Re: People are... um, silly sometimes

I bought one of those chips when they were new and built an analog delay around it from scratch. It was in a wooden box! The internal clock was so loud that you'd always hear it in the delay sound. My buddy built one that had a notch filter that followed the clock frequency! Genius. He works for SGI...

Re: a word to everyone about mic cables...

I want to give some props to Redco too. I just had some cables made for my 24-track Otari and Digi001. They all came out really clean and well done and there were no problems. They are straight up guys and will treat you right. Andy Hong had most of his studio done by them and digs them too. I have ...

Re: MIC REVIEW: The BLUE "Mouse"

I used a Mouse on snare on a Holiday Flyer record and really liked mixing it with a SM57. I thought it was a cheaper mic of theres, like the Baby Bottle, and when I was told it wasn't I felt guilty for putting by a snare! I use the Dragonflys a lot, on toms and vocals msotly. Good stuff. Skipper, Er...

Re: When is Larry gonna give up some truth?!

I do a lot of local artists in Portland that don't get a lot of attention. Only a few things per year seem to get much notice. I like the Decemberists record a lot. A new Richmond Fontaine is out the JD Foster and I did that I think is great. Laurel Brauns is a local songwriter who made a cool CD he...

Re: OT: Elliott Smith has died...

It's been a rough day. Thanks to everyone for condolences, thanks to The Western Conference and my intern, Trent Hayes, for letting me slack off on the session today (the band offered to cancel but I figured we might as well do something, Trent is busting out tracks in the next room while I "supervi...

Re: where was under the radar

I'm trying to come up with the Nov End Rant. It's hard to do these things 6 times a year. Damn. I was thinking about discussing "follow through" and how people put out CDs and have no fucking idea what to do with the 1000 in boxes...

Re: where was under the radar

Yeah, we've decided to give Under the Radar a rest. Matt and Rob did great jobs on it but when it comes time to do an issue these days we have way too much stuff waiting to get published and decided to use that space for more articles and such. Plus it started to feel that the "reviews" were reading...

Just list it on eBay and say it works great, then ship it out and blame the carrier. Oh, wait, people already do that?
