Re: Archives

I don't own an airline but I can comment on the magazine: Current content is always free. Gear reviews are always free. Printed copies of the new issue mailed to you are free (In the US). PDF's of the new issue are free (in the world). If you've had a subscription for years, and maintained the accou...

Re: Interview Idea

I forgot to ask any questions and no one mentioned Jim. Seems crazy, looking back.

Sound Designer files

Does anyone have the ability and knowledge to convert an old Pro Tools session with Sound Designer II files into a current session? I have a mix client (and former Tape Op writer) who wants me to mix something by next Monday and he just discovered this old session is SDII. I'm sure he'd be fine with...

I rarely sell mics. They all shine at some unexpected juncture.

Re: No fancy tube mics - am I missing out?

Nothing is happening when we are "thinking" about recording. Although a few discussions here and there can open doors.

Re: An Analog Setup for My Needs (Tape Machine Talk)

If you can make it fun, then do it. It was fun to use the 238 recently and I get it. Between Tape Op and Pro Tools I’m sick of computers.

Re: An Analog Setup for My Needs (Tape Machine Talk)

I'm with Eric. I've been through the valley of overbias. I own 3 or more tape decks right now, and the reason the main 3 are Otari is that they are like Toyotas and keep running. I have spent well over $60,000 on tape decks over the last 20+ years. Seriously. Decks, parts, repairs, MRLs, spare decks...

Are you using in an Aux send and return type situation? If so Mix should be 100% wet.

Re: Bantam TT to 1/4 for guitar pedal after recorded?

Re-amping devices will reduce output level and set up proper output impedance to feed into units that are expecting guitar output-type levels. from Wikipedia: "Playing back a signal from recording studio equipment directly into a guitar amplifier can cause unwanted side-effects such as input-stage d...

Re: Adding Center Detent Pan Pots to a TEAC Model 1 Line Mixer?

That's so true about center detent never being "true". I've talked to people like Dan Kennedy at Great River about this in depth. The only way to get true center is to hardwire a "pan cutoff" like I have on my RND 5088 console, but removing the pan bumps the ch level up 3 dB!

Re: Sytek no longer making the MPX 4aii?

I kinda soured on my 4 ch pre pretty fast and sold it, but I knew a lot less about good gear back then and have grown a lot. Mike was knowledgable, obviously.
