Re: Mixing with or without the band
All great advice, thanks! Basically, we're going with copious notes, and then we're posting (I know, I know) mp3s for them to comment on. It's not quite as good as having them in at the end of each mix session, but I think it will work. Now I remember what I loved about working exclusively in a DAW....

Mixing with or without the band
I know the answer is going to be "depends on the situation", but I was curious as to whether folks like to mix with or without the band in the room. We're in the process of doing our first mix project without the band present and we're realizing that because of our setup (lots of outboard) recall is...

Re: Dear god please help.
Yeah...I'd definitely suggest getting the 2nd hard drive. They're cheap. I just got a 120GB 7200rpm drive for $80 (after the dreaded rebates). I also like to work on the desktop, so I just build a folder for each band's project on the audio drive and then put a shortcut to it on the desktop. Your pr...

Re: posse in the studio?
PBR is the bestest. I've got the mini-fridge currently stocked with it. As for rockstar drinks, the bassist in my band has recently taken to getting a can of Diet Rockstar (I shit you not) before playing. It is a truly godawful, yet amusing (which is why she buys it) beverage. Incidentally, back on ...

Re: Shure SM7: Your Opinions
It's on my list, but I'm not sure I would pick it as a do-it-all mic. I'd be worried that too many tracks with that big sound would get to be a bit cluttered. I do like it on some folks for vocals (including myself). What kind of stuff would you be recording with it?

TapeOp Con - Thank you!!!!
Thank you Craig! Thank you Larry! Thank you everybody! It was incredible. My only critical comment for next year...schedule a single "lunch" break. I "forgot" to eat cuz I ran from panel to panel. It probably doesn't matter as the panels I'll be at will run over anyhow (that's a good thing). ...

I like my Theremax just fine, though I do need to tune the oscillators one of these days. I patiently built it and it worked! It was a first for me.

Re: new strings wow duh
This may be sacriledge, but I just don't like how bright/sharp new strings sound (at least for me). I like them broken in.
I'll ditto the new batteries thing though. The same goes for new drum heads...I always encourage new heads for recording.
