When you lower the bridge past a certain point - and it doesn't matter what technique you use to do it - you lose tone, because you decrease the pressure that the strings are exerting on the guitar's top. I'm surprised at the prices I'm hearing for a neck reset. I had my Martin D28 done a couple of ...

I know we tend to be conservative and often think that the old stuff is better... but when it comes to bass speakers, the new stuff is head and shoulders over anything from the 1960s or 1970s. The best driver for your cabinet really depends on the cabinet size and port design/size... Ted Weber does ...

The single most important thing is knowing how to sing properly. I've been singing professionally since I was a little kid doing opera and I attribute my ability to go on long tours without losing my voice to the lessons I learned back then. This is even though I generally have done a lot of drinki...

I recently sold an M500 on eBay to a guy named Rodger Murphey, and proaudioheaven is his web site. I emailed him saying that it seemed like a shame to reribbon a mic that's in great shape just to do the "DX" mod, and got no answer. I have a M500 reribboned by Sank and one reribboned by Clarence Kane...

Ribbon mics also sound really nice on upright bass for certain situations. Many mics will get the job done to satisfaction, but the main ingredient for a good recorded sound (in my experience) is a properly treated room or a large room so that reflections & standing waves of the low freqs aren't so...

I made it through three semesters of calculus in college, with As and Bs. I had to take them for my major in Computer Science, although the only thing I've actually used calculus for is in figuring out algorithm efficiencies, which is something I've never seen done in "real life." Generally I don't ...

They are very different. The M160 has a double ribbon and features full range and flat response. It is made for musical instruments. The M260 has a single ribbon and has a response curve tailored for voice work, i.e., the spoken word, so the bass response is attenuated. That said (and I've not tried...

Here's a cut I made using two Shure 330s as X/Y overheads, an M88 on kick drum, and NO snare mic. I think it sounds pretty good. No EQ or compression, not mastered.

A similar question: what precautions should you take with tube gear and temperatures? If you think about it, tubes and point-to-point wiring are more able to withstand temperature changes than are transistors and printed circuit boards, as expansion and contraction can not have as much of an effect...
