Re: Underwhelmed by ATMOS music (So far)

I get your points -- especially the idea that such an implementation would work better in luxury cars. To me the car just seems like a great opportunity for atmos because you have this controlled space with fixed listening positions and the opportunity to place multiple speakers. But yeah, noisy! An...

Re: Underwhelmed by ATMOS music (So far)

I think maybe the real opportunity for atmos music is in cars.

Let's talk your favourite manual fades

I was just remembering doing manual fades on mixes the other day -- are there any that you still think of as being particularly good examples?

Re: Overdrive pedals educate me

For Vox AC amps, a good Proco Rat will be perfect. The other pedal that gets associated with ACs a lot is the Crowther Hotcake, which was designed by — a drummer! The Split Enz old drummer to be exact. Made in New Zealand. I have an AC15 too, and with pedals it really prefers the Normal input over t...

Re: Distressor Plugins

Klanghelm has a great compressor that will get you right in that neighbourhood. It's incredibly inexpensive, as well. I listened to the Arouser drum samples and the Klanghelm does that same thing.

Gotta agree, that La Grange thing is egregious. Sounds like someone doing a transfer with the master fader down, reading a copy of TapeOp...

Hi Gregg, just curious, really. The Modern English one has bothered me since the song first came out, so thanks for the explanation, you two! Although I am referring to the fill near the end of the Lennon song, Tony's bringing in the opening does provide some interesting context. The song starts wit...

Thanks! Yeah, the Modern English one is pretty wild -- like you say, they're completely out of time, and yet they all come in together, so it's probably an edit. The Lennon song is Andy Newmark (starting over probably included finding a new drummer who wasn't an old party friend). The first time I c...

that drum fill at the end of (Just Like) Starting Over

So my brother, a drummer, asked me the other day about this fill. If you follow the tempo it doesn't come in on the beat. Is that because there's a tape edit in there, or maybe because they used actual reel flanging that might have messed with the tempo on tape? Anybody have any ideas as to why it's...

Hey Larry, I'm pretty sure GB for iPad is only one track at a time -- at least it was a year ago. There are other DAWs that will allow for multi tracking -- Auria being one of the more popular. Cubase is also available for iPad, and there are other options as well. The interface should be class-comp...

I have one of the recent M-Audio Oxygen keyboard controllers and it works great with the iPad -- just the camera connection kit, no USB hub -- the keyboard is powered by the iPad. Great if you're just working in the iPad (you can't charge the iPad as you work this way though). Price is going to depe...

Those suggestions are really good -- for the Focusrite check out the Scarlett range too -- it's mostly USB, whereas the Saffire range is mostly Firewire.

If you're going to the most recent Mac Mini then you may encounter a lot of software and hardware incompatibilities that will make it very handy to have an older machine around. The latest Apple machines all boot the system in 64-bit only; they're not backwards-compatible with older systems and soft...

I think double-tracking the snare is one of the most salient parts of Lynne's characteristic drum sound -- it'll get you a good way there, at least.
